Unless you're going to connect all adjoining walls and foundation solidly they will move differently and cause damage. So unless you're going to make them one piece bolt them together. Take extrordinary care in flashing and make certain you bolt to either the header or uprights, not the skin of the existing building. As to structural size, shape, weight and spacing dictate size of members.
