RustyLaidlaw
I just lined my forge with some 3100F castable refractory, and the dragon's breath is excessive. I have no pressure gauge on my regulator, so I have to adjust by sound and feel. I'm feeling this issue is because there is too much fuel, but maybe the experts have a better idea? I have the back blocked off for now. Will adjusting the accelerating tip up or down help? My nozzle is in the flare at a height to make a great flame, but I'm worried that I am losing too much heat out the front. Advice??
Steve Sells
Way too much, turn it down
78sharpshooter
One of those burners is completely choked. Try lowering the pressure and choke half open
Frosty
The flames look good for air fuel ratio, turn it down. The #1 rule when tuning burners is do ONE thing at a time and test it. If you do more than one you'll never know what did what, lucky guess is NOT the way to do these things. Oh yeah, keep notes. Frosty The Lucky. ThomasPowers
Get a regulator! You will pay for a common 0-30# propane regulator in just a couple of bottle refills and save that in a very short time.
RustyLaidlaw
Looking for a gauge for my regulator now, Tom. Sharpshooter - I opened the choke on my second burner and I guess the extra O2 coming through helped burn off the extra fuel in there. Works like a charm (for now). Frosty, I've turned the pressure down and by fidgeting with the regulator then fine-tuning with the ball-valve at the burner I can pretty much get it perfect. Once I have the gauge so I can tell what the heck I'm doing I'll be able to come up with a system to actually regulate it and not have to guess. Thanks again for the help guys! eseemann
Good Morning All, So how much (if any) Dragon's Breath do you want coming out of the forge?
Frosty
A few inches of flame tinged slightly orange indicates a reducing atmosphere in the forge preventing scale formation IN the forge. It also indicates a higher rate of CO (Carbon Monoxide) formation. Then again you must have good ventilation to safely use a propane forge, a CO monitor is also highly recommended. Frosty The Lucky. Dodge
Good Morning All, So how much (if any) Dragon's Breath do you want coming out of the forge? What Frosty said. The length of the DB depends largely on how much burner you have in relation to your forge chamber. The more DB, the more heat you are wasting so you want to keep it minimal. That being said, if you aren't getting the heat you want with minimal DB, you probably don't have a big enough forge for what you want to do. OR turn up the heat and just live with the fact you will have to use more fuel and hence, have more DB. I know this is very simplified; there are a lot more factors to dialing it in but I'm a simple man (many consider me simple minded) But a simple mind is a happy mind :D
eseemann
Dodge, That makes sense to my simple (work addled) mind. So you can use the Dragon's Breath as a diagnostic tool, that is very neat.
Frosty
Yes, dragon's breath is a fire management gauge for propane forges same as fire color in a coal or charcoal forge. Frosty The Lucky.
