therepairman1557 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Well, this is my first time forging a hammer, and I have to say I am pretty pleased. I was very apprehensive about starting this project but, now I can't wait to start another one. This one only weighs in at 1 3/4lbs. I believe I will be giving this first one to my son for his birthday in February, any way as usual any critiques or critisms are welcome. Always looking to step it up a notch. Will be heat treating tomorrow. Maybe I can get a handle on it too! Quote
Stephen Olivo Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 nice job! They can be verry addictive. :D Quote
therepairman1557 Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 Completed hammer. Forged entirely by me. Quote
johnnie Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Very nice, well done. What steel is it? Quote
Frosty Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Nice looking hammer, I'm very fond of straight peins, they make drawing lengthwise so much easier. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
therepairman1557 Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 This one is made out of 0-6 not the very best steel for a hammer but it was free and this was my first try so I just went with it. After heat treat I put it on the Rockwell tester and it rockwelled at about 52 on the c scale Quote
Jim Coke Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Greetings Repairman, Very nice stuff coming out of Kalkaska... You will have to bring it down to my shop for a proper road test.. Keep up the great work.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim Quote
therepairman1557 Posted January 25, 2014 Author Posted January 25, 2014 Thanks Jim, going to pats today, still want to come see you and work with you a little too, can never have too many ways of doing things. Oh yes, and I definitely want to see that line shop take care and will see you soon! Quote
Daniel S Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 That is a really good looking hammer. Nice job. Did you have a striker or do it all yourself? Quote
VaughnT Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Very nice bit of work! How'd you do the eye? Slit-n-Drift? I've got some mystery metal here that I've been thinking about learning one. It's some kind of carbon steel that used to be a roller in a conveyor system. Only 1.125" in diameter, but plenty enough to make a small hammer or two. Quote
therepairman1557 Posted January 27, 2014 Author Posted January 27, 2014 Slot punch then drifted Quote
Daniel S Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Even more impressive doing it alone. Great job. Quote
therepairman1557 Posted January 28, 2014 Author Posted January 28, 2014 Thank you! Was a little sore after this. Quote
