August 14, 201312 yr Been looking for years and all the waiting paid off! 160lb with loads of rebound! Measured rebound at 85% with a 1" ball dropped from 10".......my wife insists it was closer to 90% but I'll be happy at 85! Peter wright stamping seems visible but I will have a better look in the daylight!
August 14, 201312 yr Author Great find! That's a nice size. Whatcha gonna make first? Likely going to start by making some much needed tongs and punches! Then I can have a go at some other things!
August 14, 201312 yr Feet ledge looks like PW too, Rebound should improve once you take the rust off the face...
August 14, 201312 yr Tongs, punches, chisels, drifts.... Then you need to make a hold down. I'm a firm believer in starting out by making the tools, even if you don't have a need for said tool right now. Make those tools to the very best of your ability, including sanding and filing them until they look almost store-bought. These are the same skills that you'll be using on the "cool" projects, so ya might as well get used to doing them now! That anvil will give you good service for decades to come. Enjoy it!
August 14, 201312 yr Nice find! Look like its in really good shape can't wait to see it all buffed and painted! Now get to work!
August 14, 201312 yr Nice find! Look like its in really good shape can't wait to see it all buffed and painted! Now get to work! Painted????Oh the shame of putting paint on a working tool! I kind of like the clean and oil and let it reacquire a nice working patina.... It is a very nice anvil and I hope you two have many happy hours together.
August 14, 201312 yr Author Painted????Oh the shame of putting paint on a working tool! I kind of like the clean and oil and let it reacquire a nice working patina.... It is a very nice anvil and I hope you two have many happy hours together. That's exactly what I did, painting it would be hiding the pretty steel! Here it is after a good going over with a cup wheel and a light oiling
August 14, 201312 yr You did well. She is a pretty girl. There is something about the look of old iron. If someone did want to paint an old piece of iron, I would suggest a low quality latex house paint applied liberally with a roller in a nice pastel color....
August 14, 201312 yr A lot of anvils came painted from the factory, nobody wanted one of their tools to arrive rusty. A nice tartan plaid sounds good but I have a Swedish and an American anvil. A fresh quandry, Hmmmmm. Frosty The Lucky.
August 14, 201312 yr well youre scandihoovian anvil could be addorned with firs or blood red to commemorate the Vikings, and the 'Merican one could do with a nice "General Lee" paint job. lol.
August 14, 201312 yr Oh you guys, now we are painting designer anvils...Maybe a blacksmithing scene on one side and a floral decoration on the other... Geez I didn't mean to send the thread off into the hinter lands.
August 14, 201312 yr Next you'll be dressing up your anvils in funny costumes... Oh, wait that's already been done... Now we're is the thread with the alligator anvil cover?!
August 14, 201312 yr No funny costumes here but a nice electric blanky in winter is a good thing. Okay, that's the ticket, paint them warm colors. A nice warm Mackinaw plaid? Frosty The Lucky.
August 15, 201312 yr Holy crap i meant just a coat of Black spay paint, not making it look like Al Borland or crocheting animal shaped anvil coozies lol. It looks nice oiled down by the way!
