August 10, 201213 yr Like most smiths on here, I am always on the lookout for a nice big postvise. I have a few of the average 4"-5" jaw ones around that I use all the time, but a monster vise has alluded me all together. Unfortunately, my luck continues. I haven't found a big one, but I might have found the smallest? -Derek
August 10, 201213 yr Author Yeah, it's a pin vise, but I thought it's similarity to a post vise was "striking" The "post" (handle actually) has a whole bored through it (bolt too) so that a rod, wire, or "pin" of any length can be passed through. -Derek
August 13, 201213 yr I have to have one.... :) -Hillbilly http://www.amazon.com/Hand-Jewelers-Metalsmith-Hobbyist-Clamp/dp/B000RB78XY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1344880008&sr=8-3&keywords=hand+vise
August 13, 201213 yr I actually have a small bench vise made like a postvise save that the "post" is truncated and bent in to provide a place for the bolt to tighten against the bottom of the bench. It's only about 4" tall in total. I mounted it on my travel forge for a while till I got a better method of bringing a post vise with 4" jaws!
August 17, 201213 yr This is a small vise B) And a blurry pic I've got a similar one too. A friend of mine says its a "gunsmith's" vise..
August 17, 201213 yr On this one, I had to make the spring, fine-tune the nut & screw, and put on the thick, lower washer. It is a beautiful forging, probably English.
