HWHII Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Here is a sneak peek of a gate I am doing. It will be covered with 20 roses and 100 leaves. If anyone has any suggestions, now is the time to make some changes. I still have about 75 leaves to forge up and a dozen roses to make. Quote
beth Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 HW love how youve joined the two side pieces at the top! i really like the look of that - its a great idea also liking the wibbley sides the rose looks good and full, i reckon it will be fabulous. will the design face only one way? always think for playground the kids should get some of the action too, inside the gate, as well as the passing public.. ThomasPowers Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Will it meet code? I'd worry about climb-ability issues. Quote
Bentiron1946 Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Nice looking design but I share Thomas' concerns about code and climbing issues. No use getting sued blind by some parent who has an out of control child that decides to do the wrong thing and get hurt. Isn't awful to have to worry about such things? Quote
dablacksmith Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 might add some rose buds ... its lookin good tho...got sumthin similar goin as a pannel for the ren fair .... Quote
HWHII Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 Thanks for all the suggestions! Beth yes it will be two sided. As far as building code goes their is no restriction because their is no fall or swiming pool hazards. Once it is finished there will be no real hand or foot holds anyway. This gate will be left open most of the time anyway as it heads to the school office. Eric, Their are some planned. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 What about the 4" rule? Is that part of code where you are? Quote
macbruce Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 What about the 4" rule? Is that part of code where you are? That applies only to stair railings and balconies...... Quote
John B Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Is not a gate a mobile railing? Makes sense to conform to codes, even if not demanded, the situation does Quote
macbruce Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Is not a gate a mobile railing? Makes sense to conform to codes, even if not demanded, the situation does Only if the drop off is more than 2' I believe, otherwise It's not a saftey issue as far as code.......A few years back ''they'' wanted to implement a rule that any horizontal members in railings IE scrolls and such were to be verboden so kids couldn't climb the rail and jump off..... I've never heard of that happening, anyway common sense prevailed (go figgure) after there was an uproar from folks like us....... Quote
34557564 Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I love it so far, can't wait until there're some roses! Quote
ThomasPowers Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 OK I'm not as familiar with the AZ codes as you are. Quote
macbruce Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 OK I'm not as familiar with the AZ codes as you are. Az I know not..........The National Building Code...{NBC} Is what I was refering to..... :) Quote
ThomasPowers Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Good point to make as codes can be quite local! (I had some fun back in Ohio when I was restoring my house's front porch and the inspector could tell me that the original porch was not to code---but could never cite the code section as to *why*! The new owner ripped out all the original woodwork I had duplicated using architectural salvage and put in vinyl, sigh.) Quote
HWHII Posted January 27, 2012 Author Posted January 27, 2012 What about the 4" rule? Is that part of code where you are? Only for fall hazards and swiming pools. Quote
HWHII Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 Well here is another couple of snap shots. The next post I will make will be finished and installed. This is basically it all there is left to do is clean up blendind welds and lots o hand sanding then the patina which will be a blend of copper sulfate, muraric acid and hydrogen peroxcide which will give it a nice old copper penny look. Old N Rusty Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 I was wanting to see how you are going to hinge this gate. You dont want to just hang it on pintles so anybody could steal it, A fine job! Quote
dablacksmith Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 looking good! I like your leaves how did you get the edge shapes ?chizel or ?ime close to finishing mine will post when done . Quote
HWHII Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 Thanks Old N Rusty! It will be hung pintles, but I like to put a spot weld on the bottom to keep it from being lifted off. Thanks to you too Eric! The leaves are cut out om my CNC plasma then I do the veining in the flypress cold then throw them in the forge and run them under a spring fuller under then power hammer for texture. Quote
HWHII Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 Here is the finished product installed. As time goes by the patina will come up more. Quote
