Being the type of people we are, while I was shaving I started to wonder how many other people use a straight razor.

Who shaves? Last time I trimmed my beard it was with a blown propane forge that was having some issues. Only took off an inch or two so no harm done.

I use a safety razor but, have been considering switching to a straight razor for a while now.

Electric here, and that is just to trim around the goatee.

I cruised the straight razor forum, and have thought about making one. I have a coworker who just started using one, and likes it.

Switched to a straight razor a couple years ago, now nothing else will do. The quality of shave totally surpasses anything else.

I live too far from the rescue squad building to begin using a straight razor. A little too long in the tooth to switch now.

Started a couple months ago. Still get a better shave with a DE safety razor. I find it more calming to use a straight than any other equipment to shave. I use a straight 3+ days a week now.

I use one when I have the time. It takes me longer with a straight. I like the shave I get when I do.

I find a sharp straight razor is the best shave I can get, a dull razor is the worst. I shave every 2 or 3 days, otherwise I find the respirator I use when woodworking doesn't seal right.
Even when I was in the army, I could get away with every other day with the straight but had to shave daily using a safety.

I have been Shaving with a straight razor since 2004. I tried everything out on the market up to that point. I bought my first razor in an antiques shop in Las Vegas, New Mexico. I only shave about every three days as the closeness of the shave allows me to e lazy.

I'm with Thomas, I have only shaved once since September 1968 and that because I had to have throat surgery and the surgeon wouldn't do the surgery unless I did a full facial shave. I just couldn't understand that, they did the whole thing through my gapping maw, no incision anywhere  Who wants the scrap their hide anyway? <_<

got sick of trying every thing that didnt work, so found a good one in a second hand shop, made a strop, havn't had to buy disposables now for about 6 years.

I trim around my beard and shave my neck with one, weird topic

I use a straight every day and I'm about to start making some.

No way, not for me! With my luck I would sneeze and the bathroom would look like a crime scene when they found me. :o

Where does one learn to use a straight razor? I imagine it takes a lot of practice to get it right.

You get a shave-ready straight and go for it!

There are a few websites that are considered reputable on other boards that offer a vintage straight that is shave ready, but not much of a looker, and a strop for reasonable cash. These other boards that dedicated to personal grooming that can offer assistance in how to proceed. My first shave with a straight was bloodless. It was when the edge was worn and needed work that I cut myself!

I would recommend http://BadgerandBlade.com as a good starting place.

I haven't shaved in 10+ years. Too lazy I guess. I hated shaving anyway.... I do have a strop though, great for the pocket knife after sharpening on the stone.

First try with a straight was today. Not bad but definitely some blood. I am sure I will get the hang of it soon.
