ksmith0034
I inherited this anvil from my grandfather. He used it as a counter weight chained to the front of his tractor to keep the front end down. I would like help identifying it if possible. I know NOTHING about it other than it is HEAVY - I would guess 200# or so. Can anyone give me pointers as to how to learn more about this anvil? Thanks. Dave Parker
Try asking it real nice or option B, lightly wire brush the sides and look for a name. It looks a lot like a Hay Budden to me. Hope that helps.
David Einhorn
The identifying information is likely on the opposite side from what you show in the photograph. As Swordsmandp said, wire brushing the sides will hopefully reveal the makers mark as well as its weight.

Frosty
If wire brushing doesn't bring out the markings well enough try rubbing chalk into the side and wiping the excess off with a rag. Similarly you can take a rubbing with a piece of paper and a soft pencil. Frosty
ThomasPowers
Flats on the feet say PW for me too, If so: English anvil and so will be weight marked in the CWT system X Y Z, with the weight being X x 112 + Y x 28 + Z = pounds. Looks in quite using shape don't abuse it trying to gussy it up!
Bentiron1946
The best way to learn about it is to get some steel hot and go to work on it. That will tell you a whole lot about it. Please don't do any thing more to it than work it over with a wire brush. Don't take a disk grinder to it to make the face smooth and pretty, just hammer hot steel on it. Have fun with it above all else.
