channel lock pliers are a poor replacement for tongs. do yourself a favor and buy a set of tongs. if you go into any blacksmith shop you will see racks filled with tongs. channel locks are in the toolbox for working on the car.
btw railroad spikes make poor knives at best.
I am guessing that you are somewhat of a beginner (you didn't say) so no offense meant, but if you're going to go down this road you might as well start in the right direction.
soon you will be making your own tongs.

mild steel is plenty good or whatever you have laying around. Make a few sets while your at it. Drill a few holes for heading rivets or holding special jobs. No need for hardened jaws in my opinion.
A picture of the vise would be good.
google image search for 'vise jaw inserts'

Not to hijack the thread below, but other than $100, what is the difference between a $30 hammer and a $130 hammer? I was looking at buy one but didn't know if I should be cheap or spend the extra money.
the $130 hammers are quenched in kool aid...

I have heard that piezoelectric sparkers give some relief. Haven't tried them myself but you probably have a few in your shop already.

The title is pretty much self explanatory. I've been try to find an old screw swage, but I'm not having much luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If you can locate a copy of "Blacksmiths' and Farriers' Tools at Shelburne Museum" by H.R. Bradley Smith, it has an excellent chapter on the various tongs and their names and uses. This is a catalog of actual tools that were in use in the trade and collected and documented for the Shelburne Museum's shop in Shelburne, Vermont. There is a ton of information on tongs and other aspects of blacksmithing in the book. I believe it is long out of print but Amazon shows some used copies for $25. If you are in the area the museum is a great place to visit and learn. Further info at:
I'll sell my copy for $25 plus shipping. Good condition. Send me a private message if interested.

Amos Tucker uses S7 TIG wire after building up with MIG. Here is how he does it in the B.O.L.T.S. newsletter.
link doesn't work for me.

We make all of ours from either recycles (good) files, 1095 or W1 just because we have a lot of it..Leave them dead hard after quecnhing in parks 50. Then grind the face smooth to remove decard..
Just funt o make..Id like to have a bunch of dump rake teeth..Ive seen a spec analysis on some that came back just like file steel..About 1.27% carbon..Good stuff.
I have a dump rake that was partially crushed by a falling tree. If you're interested send me a private mail and we will work something out.

tiny tongs
in Tongs
mini tongs are just pliers. Anyone else notice this before :D
if 'mini' tongs are just pliers are large pliers just tongs? when does a tong become a plier?
-
It looks great, but tell the truth, is there a mig weld under the coller?
wondering why you would ask that?
Are channel-lock pliers galvanized?

your "unconventional assertions" don't bother me one bit. what does bother me is that I spent a few minutes of my time to give you a honest answer when the whole time you were just hiding in the weeds waiting to shove any replies down the throats of those that made them.
go on and hold your "art" in your channel locks. I won't be fooled into responding to you again.
