Hello everyone, I was hoping someone could guide me a little here. I've got 500lbs, give or take, of coal that got drenched when we had a few rainy weeks here. Since then I tried laying some out on the asphalt in the sun to dry it out but couldn't get any of it to light in the forge. Am I going to have to trash all my coal or is there something I can do? Also, how does one trash that much coal?
Thanks for reading.
put the coal in your wifes clothes dryer...... don't do it when she's home.

On that note, is it possible/sane to make tongs out of round stock, or should I specifically be going with bar stock?
you're kidding.....right?
Next question.... How do I strike a match?
funny part?..... some will answer.

I don't have much beyond my anvil, hammers, and that stubborn determination to make things work out, so I'm curious if that's enough
If you do have 'stubborn determination to make things work out', get your skinny butt out to your shop and try a few things. THEN come back, put up some pictures of your efforts and ask a question.
Then repeat the process.
That's determination.

I'm sure I'll end up tearing it down, stripping it, and painting it all purdy.
it's pretty the way it is. no paint needed. do you want to be a blacksmith or a painter?

Our refrigerator is not cooling any more. Cleaned the coil and exercised (cleaning the contacts) the temp knob. Going to go buy another one today. Dang thing only lasted 19 years. My large forge, PW anvil, post vices assorted tongs are ageless. They will still be going strong generations from now!
but they won't keep your beer cold...

Judging by Joe's website...... http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/product-category.aspx
he was doing pretty good. He sure made some good looking knives.
Sorry to hear about his death.

I can't seem to find any 7/8" bolts that are that long. Does anyone have a source for something like that?
Try Fastenal. If they don't have it they will make it for you.
Bring money.

A friend who lives nearby (Minnesota) had one of these (ice circles) form in his creek last year. About 18" diameter. Very neat.

How do some of you handle grinding and sharpening on blades that aren't straight? I'm currently doing them free-hand on a grinding wheel, but it's pretty easy to slip and get a very inconsistent bevel angle. Are there any jigs or methods that help? Or should you just do as much of the grinding/sharpening as possible before putting in the bend?

Now why didn't I think of that? :P
if I think it was a good comment I just repeat it. cranking up the click count you know. :P

I've not used it myself yet but one of my instructors mentioned using rebar wire, a bundle runs about $6 at my local home store.
this is what you want. it's soft and easy to work with. some places call it 'mechanics wire' or 'tie wire'
