Be careful with the attribution as mounting plates are not necessarily mounted to their original vise.
it's always something isn't it Mr Powers? Just think of what could happen if someone had changed the mounting plate or even the spring!! 50 years ago. BE CAREFUL out there... especially with "attribution". Haha. What a joke. Any possible reason to ad to your post count. How trivial. Keep up the good work.

you can test an anvils rebound with a small hammer just as well. just a few taps will tell you if the anvil is 'live' or not. too easy maybe?

I paid $1800 for it. I know it's a lot but I haven't been able to find one this nice for that price.
not that bad for an anvil that size. have fun with it.

I've been looking for a nice german double horn anvil for awhile now but they all are way high priced close to new. I was surfing the net at random and stumbled across an add from Aaron Cergol showing several nice ones at a decent price. After exchanging several emails I decided to make the four hour drive to his shop and have a look. This is what followed me home it's a 388# north german pattern anvil and the rebound is awesome! I had a nice visit with Aaron in the process. He's a super nice guy and a talented blacksmith as well.
so how much?

what a letdown. good luck in your search.

Well, I got here in one piece but I need to redo my forge and source a cart for it. I live on base and all the neighbors have babies so I am not sure about the banging hot metal just yet. I think I'll start out making some bottle openers or something to soften them up. mahalo!
Looking forward to reading a report. Good luck to you!

“How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg.”
― Abraham Lincoln -
how thick is the material on the "table" legs? It looks a little light to me. 1/4" to 5/16"? I know it's a table but someone is likely to sit on it at some point. The legs look like they will 'splay' if any amount of weight is put on them.
Aside from possible damage and safety the "table" would look better with thicker stock. The wood top is quite beefy which makes the legs look skimpy even if they are up to the task.
just my opinion...

Best wishes Scott. And a speedy recovery.

Be a little realistic and compare costs of weights per dollar - anvil weight per dollar vs. say antifreeze or milk or oil for your car - Anvils are cheap even if you buy a new one. They last a lifetime or 10, and they will always make you money - just buy one and use it - upgrade later if needed. Take the price of an anvil over 10 years and its a very cheap hobby that will pay you back 10 fold - come on quit whinin'.
tru dat.

I studied the Fibb's back when researching spirials as well as in math classes way back when we still had 9 planets in the solar system...
what does that have to do with the the subject at hand?

I was warned of this a couple of weeks ago. We can thank global warming for this. :P Due to the heat wave across the country propane usage has spiked so the price has went up. And yes, this is sarcasm. Thanks to the loony left I can't get coal, even though my state is swimming in it and now my supply of other fuels are going up. I did get my 100lb tank filled, I shall go work out my frustration on an undeserving piece of steel. B)
I was going to mention that it isn't really 'global warming' it's 'climate change'. I think snow in Atlanta qualifies as climate change. But then I saw you were from Alabama ( :P :P :P :P ), so.... never mind.

Anyone have any idea where I can get some appropriately sized u-bolts?
go to your hardware store and get a piece of threaded rod. I would get 1/2".
Now you can bend up any size U-bolt you want.
Swamp Iron???? Ok, Ok sorry but I just wanted you to look. JUST LOOK!!!
