How did you cut out the continent's again, that looks great. How did you amount for the curvature or did you kinda wing it?

Working on a candle holder, need to put some leaves. I'd never tried to do that before and I must say, it's time to find or make some more tools. I'm going to tighten up the base a bit but it'll have to be over the coal forge but I'm very happy with it so far.

Starting in on a cruciform like dagger. It's about 14 inches long in the blade. If I can pull this off I may getting moving on to an arming sword to go with it. I managed to hammer in the rough bevels and we'll see what happens. Using the other half of this piece to make a bullocks dagger, just cause it's gonna be fun explaining it to people who don't know.

That's brilliant! I have like 5 of those things laying around and suspect they are breeding. Yesterday I did the dishing hammer as well, took me a while to punch the opening and had to work the hole on the horn of my anvil since I didn't make my drift yet. Worked out nicely. Hung up a take on my door for finished small items as well. Today was cleaning and organizing in the shop, made a quick half dozen or so hook to go into my peg board to hang tools, swept, vacuumed, organized the hot work shop. Ripped out the last wall that needed to come out on the first floor of the shop. It has a lot of really good barn wood in it that I'll salvage later. But my open floor space is now completed. Now to get rid of the debris.

I've had 2 hammer handles snap on me while working, both were ash. I'm sticking with hickory whenever possible.

This thread has taken a shocking turn. It's normally so well grounded.

Don't go with magnetic. Maybe a dual impulse just in case he forgets it's there.

I may have to direct my girlfriend to this conversation. She does elder law, property, and estate planning, but you never know when something like that may walk in her door.

Started working on hardy tooling for the new anvil and made a few bottle openers. I think I made my stand a half too low. My last one, I didn't realize, was a few inches too tall. Might explain some of my elbow issues.

If you want to spend time in the forge instead of with your wife on your anniversary you may not get to try a forge weld ever again.

The videos always make it look easier. Once you get the hang of working the corners back it gets quick. You can practice that while working on other projects, like bottle openers.

Be patient in your search for tools. Check out flea markets, garage sales, ask friends, neighbors, farmers, the tools are all over but knowing what you're looking for is the biggest challenge.

I don't know what they put on this for a finish but I couldn't get through it with the wire wheel on my grinder but I found this. To me it looks like a 1 8 7 on the front right foot as you're looking at it. I'm thinking it's a weight. All other markings are gone Other features of interest, the hardy hole is 1 1/8 inch. Under the heel... Bottom... I got a gem no matter what. Now for the stand...

This just kind of occurred to me and it seems like I may amuse some of you by asking a questing with an obvious to you answer but with the increased mass of the new anvil will I also see a change in how the anvil works the metal. Am I going to see an increase in reflected energy into the metal or an I overthinking this?

That'll start right after I build the stand for her. She's gonna get some love and use.

I was at an UMBA Other Side of the Anvil event today and learned it's a 200 ish pound anvil from Columbus with an estimated date in the 1930s. I'd weigh it but my scale has a tempered glass top. That's my badly damaged Peter Wright 127lb anvil. Over the next couple days I'm going to be cleaning the paint off and I'll get a better idea of what's going on. IronDragon, there is some pitting from rust on the face of the anvil. I'm going to start with only a wire brush and then maybe sand paper.

Ring and rebound are great. I'm especially happy with the face, it is completely intact. My old anvil was missing some chunks on the sweet spot. I'll have to get the paint off it too see if a makers mark is hidden and it could use a good sanding on the work surface.
