  1. I used the anvil for the first time today. It rings very loud. All I got done was part of one side of a pair of tongs. I could have done more but I spent all morning fishing.
  2. Its made in China. The same factory that makes the princess auto cast steel anvil and same as the 66lb eBay anvil. They are the exact same anvil that sells in Australia under the name Cougar. You can buy them in bulk direct from China on alibaba.com. I have the princess auto 110lb anvil and I am fairly happy with it other than a few minor defects. The one thing is quality control or the lack of. Make sure if he has a couple on hand to test them all and see if there is any difference in them. If you do let us know your results.
  3. Nimba offers the unfinished option also. That anvil is impressive. You have created a masterpiece.
  4. Do you know any maintenance guys in any large factories. I got bags of them when i was maintenance in a food processing plant i used to work in. Every bearing we replaced i cut the outer race an collected all the balls from inside. There definitely not something you can find in a hardware store. It thakes a really bug bearing to get a 1 inch ball though. Also some of the really big bearings are roller bearings and wont do you any good for the ball bearing drop test. I just looked on ebay and there is 1 inch ball bearings for sale. Just put 1 inch ball bearing in the search and you will find them.
  5. Rebound test still shot on both anvils. Vulcan: Princess auto: Size reference next to my vulcan #10 I began cleaning up the horn. I am using a file because i dont ever use power tools on an anvil. Im going to add that a file cuts steel on the horn ok but skates a file on the face.
  6. Here is a video comparing the princess auto anvil rebound next to the rebound on my vulcan 100#er. The vulcan has 80% rebound and the princess auto anvil has 90% rebound. You can also hear the distinct difference in sound.
  7. The anvil they show in the very beginning of the video is the end product. There is a video that shows it at the end also but this particular one shows it in the beginning.
  8. You have to watch the full video to see the end priduct. It shows it at the beginning though.
  9. Take the money and run. The best way to repair it is remove whats left of the top and forge weld a new top on but that is by no means an easy task.
  10. About the only thing i can tell you is its a yorkshire pattern. I will look around the web and see if i can spot anything in particular your anvil has in common with others.
  11. It looks to be in decent shape other than the feet missing on the back but that doesn't effect the usability of it. If you can get it for a decent price go for it.
  12. Your ebay add will probably be deleted shortly but i will look it over and tell you what i think.
  13. Im sorry I cant help but it is an extremely interesting one.
  14. Looks more like a Vaughan/brooks to me. If that is so it is English made. The reason i believe it is a Vaughan/Brooks is the very thick heal. It is a very nice find if it is.
  15. I would never really eat food cooked over molten metal but the name of the restaurant would suggest something like that. It is still a catchy name and i would have to eat there because of it.
  16. That would be cool! I wonder if they cook the food over molten metal. You are not that far from us. One of these days i might be in your neighborhood and hungry. If i am im getting ahold of you!
  17. Im planning on having luch with him at a local bar that has some amazing burgers. He only lives about 40 minutes from me. Seems like a really nice guy. He has a facebook page called holland anvil.
  18. Well i would go with the kanca because they are forged steel over ductile iron as mentioned. Also on Alibaba.com it is mentioned that there is a one month wait for the anvils to reach mainland port so it could be a long wait. Now for the quality control with these anvils have a look at my review on the princess auto anvil. The rebound is awesome but the quality if the finish is questionable. These anvils are made in the same factory as the anvils this guy is trying to "sell". I am a firm beliver that the older anvils are better to an extent. But the kanca is on the higher level of quality. Ductile iron is an OK anvil alloy but not number one. The top of the line would be something like a rhino anvil because the steel is air hardening tool steel and is hardened all the way through. Hoffman anvils are top quality as is the holland anvil. They are both H13 tool steel. Peddinghaus and kanca are the only forged anvils i k ow of. Princess auto sells an anvil they claim is forged but its from china and only 66lbs so i question it. There is a lot of options for new anvils. I would highly recommend doing a few hours of research before settling on anything.
  19. $50 cheaper would have been nice but it is still the cheapest anvil in its weight category. I believe the next cheapest would be the NC Calvary which from what i have hear is barely out of the ASO category. So for $160 cheaper than the NC this cant be that much worse even after spending the time cleaning it up. And for the same price as the NC 70lb anvil you get 30lbs more. The one thing i wish is that the shipping was a little cheaper.
  20. Honestly if i was to go back in time and buy my first anvil all over again i would go with the kanca anvil. It is a forged anvil and good quality for a very good price.
  21. Those anvils are made in china and are available through alibaba. i was considering buying some of these to turn around and sell but chose not to because of the lack of quality control. If they are truly 55-62 hrc i wiuld say theu are on the higher end of the hardness scale.
