  1. I havent put it on a scale but the listing said 80lbs and it has to be close to that maybe a little heavier. It has a date but the first and third numbers are corroded away but it is 18?6
  2. Picked this Fisher sawers anvil up at auction for $21. They had it listed as a horse anchor. I will get it cleaned up and better pictures. I know...my truck is a mess. Im using my Suburban to haul wood for making charcoal so it is what it is.
  3. I wouldnt do it in public for real. Man im not sure about really doing it in private.
  4. It would make a great demo at the local fair and get the fire department to "extinguish" it.
  5. IThere is a local foundry about 10 miles from me that melts scrap and casts forklift weights. I am going to get a pattern made and have them melt some rail road rails and cast them into an anvil for me. Im not sure about the finishing and heat treat but i will figure it out when the time comes. I figure this is the best way to make an anvil from a railroad track
  6. The rail IS high carbon steel so why add another plate on top. When you weld a plate on its edges it warps and causes a gap to form between the plate and rail which will cause it to loose any rebound it MIGHT have. I would just use the bottom of the rail as the face.
  7. My vulcan: don't forget i was you first true love!!! My PAA: i cant belive you had me on Craigslist! I see how you treat your new anvil's. My 1700's anvil: you drove over 1500 miles round trip to get me and you havent even mounted me and given me a beating! Its been ages sense I've been kissed by hot steel! Fisher sawers anvil: i have been tied to a horse in a field for God's know how long... I've been craped on, stepped on, rained on and almost everything you can imagine. If it wasn'tfor you i would still be a horse anchor. Thank you...your my hero!
  8. I won the "horse anchor" which was confirmed by njanvilman to be a fisher Sawers anvil here is a few pictures. I won it for $21. I will get it cleaned up and post more pictures.
  9. As small as the spot is it doesn't hurt this thing a bit. I am debating on selling this anvil and upgrading to the Holland alloys anvil and start a review about that one. The princess auto anvil review will continue. The next time im in the Detroit area im going to jump to Canada and grab another one. Should I sell it? I will be going down in size but a huge jump in quality!
  10. The angle the face is broke off it makes it look like a plow makers anvil. Other than the little damage to the face it is in nice condition. The damaged edge could be cleaned up and be an advantage!
  11. These were the instructions that came with my kast-o-lite from Wayne Coe. Not much to it just add a very little amount of water at a time. It really doesn't take as much water as you would think.
  12. I have found an 80lb fisher saw makers anvil at an auction. They have it listed as a horse anchor. I bet nobody will know what it is and i can get it for less than $50. I knew what it was immediately. The auction is next weekend. Im hoing its raining and cold and nobody shows up. I will get some pictures. The eagle is a little hard to make out but its there and there is moss growing on it. I've never been more excited for an auction.
  13. Nice find. Do you get leads to these beauties.
  14. That is kinda what i was thinking. The terminology has changed so much but these original materials still exist. We need to preserve these as they were originaly. You talk to a normal person and they think this is wrought iron. Just because it has some bends and twists doesnt change what it really is. I had a guy I was buying an anvil from argue with me that the vulcan anvil he had (not the anvil i was buying) was not cast iron but wrought iron. No matter what i told him he refused to belive me even though he had AIA sitting on his shelf he wouldnt open the book and he stood his ground.
  15. Wrought is "worked iron" so rolling is still working it. Wrought is a past tense word for wok.
  16. I know of blister steel and shear steel...i have an anvil from the 1700's that has a shear steel face. But that is steel correct? I have never heard of HCWI
  17. Really? I though iron+carbon=steel. And really high carbon is cast iron. Everything i was ever taught was wrought iron has "almost" no carbon.
  18. I was wondering the same thing. But the spot is there and it really didnt start showing until i started working steel on it. This was the original photo of the spot on the edge of the defect and the circle cant be seen.
  19. I know about vents but the last picture of the side of the anvil i showed i belive is where the sprue was cut off. And it seems like this would be an odd place for a vent. Im working on uploading a video to YouTube of the rebound over the spot
  20. now i understand why people go to school for photography. Is the sprue the excess from casting that gets cut off? The spot is about 1 1/4 inches. I think these are cast on there side.
  21. HUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!! I figured out why they took a grinder to the face! I think this circle spot is filler rod and they ground it flush. The rebound drops right off to nothing over this spot. Here is a perfect example of poor quality control with these anvils. I mean come on. One thing i have to say is all the way around the spot has excelent rebound and then you drop a bearing over this spot and its dead. It was hard to get the camera to focus. Im going to get a better pictures and a video of the rebound over the spot. One thing that gets me is it has this spot but rings like a bell.
  22. 2 of my anvils i can trace back to the original purchaser. In 1971 Fowler farms bought my 1969 vulcan #10 from our local hardware store. Around 1974 or 75 the farm shut down and they had an auction. The Reames farm bought the anvil that wasn't supposed to be in the auction for $35. Then it sat on the floor of the shop until it was given to me 4 years ago. It was never used. The other anvil i can trace back as far as 3 weeks ago when i bought it brand new. I have an anvil from the 1700's that i know almost nothing about. There is some letters stamped in it but i havent figured them out yet. I know there is an & in there and a couple of R's.
