  1. awesome looking blade man!! love the guard very clean!
  2. jack hammer bits are good for tools as well, i have many tools made from them including hammers , punches , chisles and some knives. that stuff has good rust resistance as well and its hard as um...well steel lol :)
  3. L6 as stated above is a high nicle/chrome mix that can be found in most framing hammers , hard as a sucker and rust resistant to boot.but its not very practicle for most work unless you get them for nothing or next to it.
  4. lol tell me about it, the cold is a problem for me too...when the forge isn't running lol. yeah I beams tend to twist a little , maybe welding some cross braces inside the ibeam would help make it a little more stiff. but if that drill rod does the trick...
  5. square tubing is mild steel and not good for making knives.
  6. hey guys and gals! been a little while but im back in the forge for the winter months. cant wait to get my hands all dirty and stuff lol. well this is what i have done over the summer not as much as i would have liked but you know...i have done a few more things but they are not complete yet. its a moose antler hunter blede: l6 tool steel(hammer) oa length: 10 1/2" blade length: 6"
  7. i agree with rob man. i'm in the same boat as you, evrything is hand worked and even some of my machines are too lol but in the end you can tell the diff and thats what ppl pay for when they go to you. the guys that charge 40 and 50$+ an hour have debts to pay...for the big equipment and space they need to do the big jobs.i figuer after fuel(forge and gas) , misc.(tool use, grinding disks, drill bits ect.)and time(desing and work) i charge about 20$an hour + materials(+ a 35% mark up on large jobs) on a quote, then i try and get it done under quote wich is mostly the case.
  8. like your press man, real simple , i bet it works great.one question though if i may, what do you have as a pump? nice work space as well, nice and neat lol not like mine at all hahaha
  9. i like a plane jane myself but those are awesome knives, really love the first one in the "finished" post, real nice man.
  10. i have a full beard its about a foot long, i dont shave and havn't for many many years lol, the most i do is trim the stash and still only when i end up eatting it lol.ppl keep asking if im hot with a beard but i guess im so used to it its no worst than anyone else on a hot day, the funny thing is i only grew my beard when i started blacksmithing and didn't have "time" to shave anymore :)the plus side of having a beard is it keeps the heat of the forge from your skin, you can store food in there for later...and you cant tell if your face is dirty.... :)

i use hydrolic oil, it works well for me. the knife looks awesome, cant wait to see it with a handle i bet it will look nothing like a kitchen knife when its done.
  12. i would take 38 hours over 50 any day!! nice work guys!
  13. sounds like you had an awesome time! its good to see ppl still have appreciation for simple yet heart felt gifts, im sure that you got some brownie points there glenn:) and congrats on graduating andie, your pa must be proud.

real nice blade, love the deep etch.nice touch mark as well is it punched? and how big is it , i like to be able to picture it in true scale.
  16. that looks really nice man! love the handle and the hamon looks real primal nice:)
  17. thx for the reply guys. i "WANTED" the long part of the guard to be a thumb rest but when i put it on it didn't look right so i made it straiter ,so yes i guess i did intend something else for the guard, very perseptive of you antigoth24. as for the etchant i used was 1 part brine (salt saturated water) and 2 parts viniger i put the blade in for 8 hours at room temp.
  18. double edged cable damascus boot knife. over all:8 1/4" blade: 5" white ash handle with mild steel guard and but cap. this was really fun to make, the hardest part for me was making the guard, it was my second go but it turned out better than i would have expected it to lol. it was a nice destraction from my other projects.
  19. lol! see thats why i cant leave to long, i miss all this good stuff JB: yeah i thought about useing rivets, sadly only after i was done lol. i made two U like brackets with a lip on eather side , they are a little shorter than the stock so that when i put the lag bolts thrue they will tieghten their hold on the hanger. there will be a little gap between the wall and the hanger but thats ok, it was my first one. i think im gonna do like you said and use rivets in the future.
  20. hello all! sorry havn't taken the time to post in the last bit. ppl are posting some really nice stuff of late here is some stuff i have been working on. its some randome stuff i've made over the past month for my self and others. the scroll things are cabinet headers for my kitchen, there are about 8 more of those to come. i made the froe for a guy, it works good for a light weight, its made from spring. the garden claw is a forge welded bundle with a comfy handle that fits in your palm, heavy duty for the hardcore gardener. i made 2 of them and gave one to one such person 2 spoon augers (withgout holder)one is 1/2" in and the other is 3/4" i just made a quick holder to try them befor i went ahead and built a nice one and they work real nice, sharpenning them was tricky though, to flat it bites to much ,to round it bites to little.lastly, a plant hanger made to be fixed to a wall or a pole via 2 brackets, the brackets are not shown in the pic, the sqhare sides are 16" long up and down. anyway thats all i got for now, wish i had more time to be out there but with work and being half dead at the end of the day i can muster no more than a wimper lol. tell me what you think.
  21. i think you did good with that idea. the knife looks alot more angular and aggressive . really like the birds eye as well, my grandfather got a few planks...i'll have to hit him up for some after seeing this lol. thx for the reshow :)
  22. whatever it is i wouldn't waste good tool steel to make a froe lol, i use truck springs(the thick ones) they upset nicely and work really well.
  23. here we call them "enclume" in frensh, otherwise its an-vil
  24. man i have to say thats your cleanest blade so far (that i have seen), love the curve of the blade and the flow from blade to handle( very good job on the handle) yup very well done!
  25. lol poems like that where not writen in the best of times. but more to the subject, i call my forge "red shed forge" cuz well i work out of a red shed. its short and simple plus it rhymes and the ladys find it cute.
