Show me your Bottle Openers!
GrumpyBiker replied to Arbalist's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Finished a couple (actually my first two) today ! https://postimages.org/][/url] -
DF has a good video on making one. https://youtu.be/usFFhId3WnQ .

I'd not considered that. Good thinking!

I just couldn't pass something like this up for $16 . I mean if nothing else I could give it away as an x-mas present !
-
I was thinking of using it for making edge files.
-
I just couldn't leave it there. but I have a bunch of old tools I just could see languishing in a junk-tique store. like the hand powered drill pressing found!
-
I came across this saw blade Vise for $16. Couldn't pass it up. I figured if nothing else I could use it to sharpen my machetes & longer knives. Anyone have one of these & is there a practical use for it in conjunction with blacksmithing?

What did you do in the shop today?

Second attempt at a bottle opener is going much better. It appears I will have training wheels on for quite a while. Acquiring quite a bit of respect for those who have mastered this art of moving metal. -

I had an hour before my wife would have dinner on the table so I only got this to the halfway point. My first attempt at a bottle opener. -

My wife has put in a request for curtain holdbacks as I first project. I see quite a few in Google photos of them from round bar . But most are commercial made. while there seems an endless supply of bottle openers being made how's about these household items? While I like the round bar stuff has anyone made some from flat stock? examples snagged from the web... I made these a few years back before I had a Forge & an anvil so I'm hoping the next ones are easier. using a torch & a vise was a pain.

It's all done ready for testing the burner inside the forge. Man does this thing put off the heat. I've got some "tuning" to do but so far so good. I cracked the brass nut on the cheap hose so I ordered a 16' braided stainless hose & everything is sealed. No bubbles.

Well I tried to take a pic in the dark with the flash but I can barely see the flame. I'll get a better pic later. Also here's video of it I uploaded to YouTube....

I do not see any markings on this set.

Yeah, given they're $50+ new I was tempted to buy more but I don't need a bunch of these style tongs. What do you mean by patination on the axe head? Also, when mounting it ( being that I'm right handed) which side should it be offset to?

I was out hunting for interesting tools when I came across these. There were three of them $18 each. I picked up one. Then found this hatchet head ( $3 ). I don't know but I think it was an altered hammer ?!? What do you all think?

I'm anxious to get the forge fired up. But I didn't want to run the forge with the 4' hose as that'd put the propane tank next to the forge. So I've ordered an inline shut off valve & a 5" hose (9' overall). That will get the tank on the floor. I'll feel more comfortable with that. Its scheduled to arrive this Tuesday. I'll get some photos of it running.

By "Reducing Flame" you mean to much fuel not enough oxygen?!

Who is this addressed to , myself or Blacksmith- 450? I'm getting a little lost in the conversation.

I'm up the road in the Marion Area

Chiefum, I was in the same boat. Bought a burner & built my forge. Finished it up on Saturday & have $150 in it altogether. Good luck & have fun with your search. Window shopping is cheap & there's lotsa folks here with a ton of knowledge.
