  1. I came across this the other day while searching railroad track / blacksmithing. No back story to go with them. it Horne wondering as I have a few sections of track. But I do not have a swage or Swage Shaped Object . LoL
  2. I have to admit very little knowledge of market prices on most brands but they had some Texas & NC Tool anvils at the $280-$320 (plus tax) range 70lbs The Hay-Budden 70lbs anvil they had (used) was $560
  3. I spend a lot of time out in Ohios Amish Country. I visit Sugarcreek Forge often & spend time chatting & watching Jesse Hemphill work. I was asking his advice on old vs new anvils & where to buy as the auctions in and around Holmes county are notoriously tough for getting away with a bargain. He mentioned Yoders Blacksmith supplies and I just saw references to that place on here while reading old posts. So I swung by as we're out in the motorhome again this weekend. Nice to see they sell new and used equipment. They also had a nice selection of hammers & tongs. Though they do focus on ferriers they had more than I expected and was told the used stuff changes all the time. So where in your areas do you recommend a person go? Useless spaces and advert photo removed
  4. I didn't glue the anvil down. I did bolt it to the stand. Is gluing the normal thing to do? I gun blued the anvil and added a heavier chain, for weight & sound. Has more of a dead sound vs a ring now.
  5. Finally got to give the wood handle thing a try today with some scrap I had. gun blued metal, white oak & copper pins aren't the best visual combination but everything went together easy enough. I made up 3 more openers to practice putting wood handles on. thank you Forum for the inspiration!
  6. I gotta make a couple with wood handles. Ive have seen a few on here & in Google searches & really like their look.
  7. I tried my hand at making one.... Then I made it again, correctly... in reverse. Made from leaf spring steel. I'm going to try a couple other designs . i mainly just wanted to see if I could do it.
  8. I want a ladle for pouring water on specific locations to cool areas of work I've completed & I don't want to mess up. Also I've never made a bowl, spoon or ladle before so I wanted to try my hand at it. Fitting for my screen name I used metal cut from my old Shovelhead FLH fender. Now I have to practice my riveting. suggestions....Copper or steel ?
  9. I use the horn on my small Railroad track anvil. This & many other reasons is why I'll never get rid of it.
  10. Ive been a prison guard for the past 22yrs & still a ways to go till I can retire, I decided to make some bottle openers for a few of my co-workers in the shape of a Folger-Adams Brass Cell key. Decided to gun blue them, seemed fitting.
  11. Yep, I added a tool rack to it. its been a while since I've been on here. been dealing with a couple ruptured disks....
  12. Any idea what hardy tool that is ? Or a guess as to its use?
  13. If you wish to contact them about the prints , here's their information. © 2009-2017 Kidron Community Historical Society • P.O. Box 234 Kidron, OH 44636-0234 • Phone: 330-857-9111
  14. Never knew that. We received a little history while I was in Subic Bay Philippines attending Advanced Naval Gunfire school for Forward Observers. Are these for that purpose, do you think , or for part of the casting process? I mean these are / were made in Ohio.
  15. Stopped by Lehmans Hardware today & while there visited the Kidron Community Historical Society museum. I'd been there before researching furniture but this trip I noticed a blacksmith section. Snapped some pics & thought I'd share. *** I'd never seen cannonball tongs before !
  16. Just enough so I could go 90° Towards the table. If I set it any higher it'd interfere with using my assembly table for large objects. Everything in my shop has to be a compromise as it serves primarily as a wood shop for my furniture making. Taking on this blacksmithing hobby is to add forged items to my furniture. Drawer pulls & handles. Corner banding & accents.
  17. I bought another 32oz of gun bluing that I used on the bottle openers. I'd considered using that but it's kinda expensive at least it's more than the vise cost me anyway. So far I've just been misting it with WD40 & calling it good.
  18. Got my post vise all cleaned up. Now it can surface rust in peace. Welded up a mounting bracket. Mounted it to a 4x4 post & lag bolted it to my 300lbs assembly table. Hopefully this will be solid enough. If not I'll have to figure something else out.
  19. 9 to go till I retire, that is all. If I could alter this meme it'd say... " if most people could walk in my shoes... they'd need new shoes!" ! Mod Edit: Photo removed.
  20. I'm looking at one that moves 300cfm to install in the ceiling over my propane forge to aid in venting the CO & drawing in fresh air to my shop this winter. Going to vent it thru the attic & out the soffit
  21. Funny you should say that. My annual Sam Adams OctoberFest delivery arrived on Tuesday! And these days I don't drink much beer that doesn't require a bottle opener.
