  1. Is it better to use tongs than just welding a rod on ? What difference do tongs make ?
  2. Thanks, but how wide and deep is the interior ? Roughly ...
  3. What are the inside dimensions of the forge ? What is your hourly gas consumption with this forge ?
  4. Im not sure what kind of chisel, punch it was. It had a flat tip so i assume its a slitter, it is one my dad had for his workshop and it is made for steel. But further than that I didn't know much about it ... I didn't expect to make some amazibg hatchet. I just saw a piece if steel and wanted to practice, i just wanted to see how the steel moves and it ended up being an axe ... But thanks everyone for the advice, now I also know how to fix my locks , lol . Michael .
  5. hi guys, do you know where i can find some koawool for my forge? I have no idea where to get it or what it costs, so any help will be well... helpful ... lol thanks for reading, Michael. and dome of that refractory cement you cover it with, any products youd suggest i use instead if you its not available in south africa. i want to use the forge to reach welding temp. thanks some*
  6. Hi guys. I have a Sidney aust 140 anvil mounted on a stand , there is a piece if railway sleeper between the anvil and the stand. I used a 4 lb hammer but it bounced most when I tapped it with a small ball and pean hammer. I was forging a 30x30 mm piece of steel that I believe to be mild steel. Thanks for the replies Michael And I'm not sure about the temp, I don't have a forge yet so I used an oxy-acetylene torch that I stuck in a vice ... It worked ... And I welder a roundbar to the metal cause I don't want I struggle with tongs . i won't say the end product came out that bad tho, its crooked as xxxx and needs about 3 days of filing and sanding, but I'm happy for a first weapon. Watch your language, as you read when you joined, this is a G rated family friendly forum and we enforce that rule.
  7. Hi guys, yesterday I was forging a rather large piece of metal into an axe. When I strike the metal, it would bounce back and I'd have to fight to keep it from falling. Do you know what I'm doing wrong ? Am I using g too small a hammer? Is the metal too big for the anvil ? Am I not striking the metal propperly ? Thanks for your feedback, Michael.
  8. hi guys, yesterday I was forging my first ever weapon , its a lovely crude war axe its a bit crooked and needs some filing, but I'm very impressed for a first weapon ( second ever smithing project btw ) the problem came with making the hole for the handle, my chisels kept getting stuck. after clamping the chisel in a vice and trying to pry it out with a crowbar, which failed horribly, I had to cut off the tip of my chisel so that I could put the head back in the ''furnace" ( a piece of 120mm steel pipe with a 6 mm wall that I drilled a hole into and stuck an oxy-acetylene torch into "safe" ) how can I avoid this in the future, I don't want to waist tools like that . thanks for any help you can provide. Michael.
  9. hi Michael.

does your book also cover forced air burners? I tried looking for it, but I couldn't find any (admittedly I might have just searched like an idiot ) And I don't want to buy your book if it doesn't contain the information I need.

If you don't cover forced air burners, do you know where I can acquire blueprints for one ?

    thanks for your time,

    Michael M.

  10. Will do, anything you would suggest I start with ?
  11. IMG_20160521_135553.thumb.jpg.cf723e602esorry for taking so long, I have to upload these individually

    Bent post

Okay, thank you very much! Michael
  14. Sorry for the insufficient info... The whole story ... I live in south africa, where there are not many blacksmiths as far as I'm aware. So all my info comes from scraps I found on google. I struggle to find anything specific on how to build burners*( not blowers, sorry for that) ,measurements , the adequate size relevant to the forge, the consumption of such a forge... So ribbon burners will work right ? I have considered them, but read that they are hard to work with , is that true ? If you guys know where I can get any blueprints or measurements that would be great, cause I'm in the dark here Thanks for your help so far Michael.
  15. Thanks for the reply, Sorry that I didn't add the kinds ofburners or anything, I dig know what kind if burners even exist. I'm from south africa , the blacksmithing community here is pretty small, so I have no one that knows anything about it, I tried googling the information, but I couldn't get any solid Info ... Thanks again Michael.

    Bent post

Hi guys, I picked up an old post vice at an antiques shop , the post is bent, can I just heat it up and bend it back, or is it not that simple ? Thas for your time.
  17. Hi guys, I'm looking to start my own blacksmith shop, I already have my anvil, now I only need a forge... I want to build a forced air gas forge, I have access to an entire steel workshop, so building it is not the problem. I need the math for a 4 burner forge with a burner configuration of "01010100010"(0= an open space,1 = blower) I like this configuratuon cause then I can have very high temp on a small spot or just regular high temp throughout... 1: will this configuration work in the way I think it will ? 2: how do I make the blowers? (I can make everything on a lathe and milling machine if nessecary) 3: what should the "math" be for the forge? 4: what will the gas consumption be per blower, per hour? 5: what can I use as refractory material, where can I accuire it ? 6: how do I assemble the whole mish-mash of parts !? Thanks for reading, I appreciate any help you can offer.
