Ive been having trouble removing scale when Ive finshed forging. I get it hot enough to wire brush it off & seems it forms back about as fast. Im not really wanting to get iron wraped around my head by a power wire brush. Thank You Ron

Ive been making a few punches and chisels from the S7 I have , it makes good chisels. Hard to forge very much stayin between Orange & Red kind a slow goin.

I guess I got lucky I Forge Welded the 3/16 X 3/4 to the necked down 1/4 thick. I upset the 3/16 to get it about the same thickness and scarfed both made the scarfs rounded. I heated just the ends on both side by side in a clean coal fire and easy on the blower. Just took my time and eased up to the heat. I took both to the anvil on the far edge rested the ladle part scarf up on the edge & the handle on near edge and rocked it down on the other. I practiced a little before I tried it when hot and think the trick is how you let go of the tongs. I let go of the bottom rein and lifted the tongs off. Any how it worked and welded up nice ,I ground it and looked like one piece. I think heating to fast has been my problem with Forge Welding. Ill keep at it Think Im Learnin Thanks Ron

I would really like to weld on the handle- Ill be drawing out and necking down part of the stock for the ladle & the necked part will be part of the handle. Ill just go at it and see what works Thanks Ron

Im want to make a ladle , necking down a 1/4 X 2 in. to 1/4 x 3/4 in. and welding on a handle. Also to make tongs

Im not sure what you call it I want to Forge Weld end to end mild steel. I know I need to upset and scarf both ends but not sure how to get them together. Do you stick them together in the fire? Take them out and put them together on the anvil? Once its welded can I forge on the weld ? How hot at the weld should it be to forge? I could use some help Thanks Ron

Sounds like you are putting some cash into this project- I have an old cross peen that was chipped on the edge of the face & the edge of the peen but I ground down the rough edges. Have you tried a Blacksmiths hammer? I was allways told to never hit 2 hammers together -think there is a difference? I think I have an old sledge hammer head thats chipped some where ,Ill see If I can find it. Ive never chipped a hammer myself but have seen a few that were . Ron

Thanks Guys Ive made a few for hot work 1 slitter 3/8, 3 round punches 3/16-1/4-3/8,flat chisels 5/8-1 1/4, & 1 butcher 1 1/4. I tried some scrap from the Road Grader Blade and made a Square Center Punch ,hardened and tempered. Seems like it works really good,I drove it through cold 3/16 mild steel.Im goning to try a Cold Chisel form the Grader Blade also. I made most of the punches and chisels to use on the Treadle Hammer, not really sure what I need. Any Ideas Ron

Yellow heat S7 cracks when struck I have some and will get you a pic of the sparks. All I have is a angle grinder. Ron Got you a pic. The S7 doesnt spark that much like other steels Ive tried. I tried to get the end of the spaks. Tell me what you think this is stuff is.I was gave this a few years ago it was a shaft out of a machine and when I got it it had Tungsten Bar printed on it. It really throws the sparks compared to S7

The last 400 blower I bought - I gave $200.00 for a Champion 405 forge with blower but did not have the tuyere.
