I have been messing around with some roses, and have a commission for 5 of them.  Im gettin the hang of all the bending and texturing but am wondering for way to clean up the inside a bit wire brushing only gets the outside and top of the leaves clean but you can still see some scale/ oxidation in between the petals. any tips ideas to try would be great appreciated.

Thanks Nick. Right now the thorns are built up mig weld then ground down with a 3" angle grinder.

Finished up 3 roses last night for my mother, sister in law and my other brothers girlfriend.  And 3 rr spike bottle openers for my dad and brothers. Forgot to get pictures  just got wax on em this morning and was rushed to get to their house.

    Think they liked em :)

Sweet I did a couple roses, bottle openers and a couple knives for presents this year.

Just some Irion pipe support I had sitting around. No matter how much you have imbibed you can still open that bottle. This is a prototype, I plan on making another one slightly smaller.  As always anything you say will only help me. I leave my feelings in the truck!

We just have to do some extensive product testing.

  5. Nice rose das , looks good, your just doin what the rest of us do, super critical of your work . Not a bad thing just seeing how you can improve. Really like the thorns and that it sits on the leaves . Nice work as usual!

Das, why take a piece of mild steel rr spike and spend all that time making a knife or KSO knife shaped object ?

Instead why not take a piece of tool steel, or knife quality steel, and make a rr spike?  THWACK the sound of the hand hitting the forehead followed by Why didn't I think of that?  End results are the same except you now have a good quality and serviceable knife.

Your a blacksmith, you CAN do that (grin). Time invested is the same, except add a small bit for forming the head of the rr spike. Then someone will read this and make Damascus bar stock and turn it into a rr spike and then into a good quality and serviceable knife. (let the fun begin, bigger grin).

    Hmmmmmm.....

    NickOHH,

Looks great.  What was your process for getting the big hole opened up on 3/8" stock?  Slit and drift then move to the horn?  I haven't tried to open up a hole like this on smaller size material yet.

Stepped Down on the near side, punched a small circular hole then drifted to a bout 5/8 then finished on the horn because my larger drift is "missing" . The loop is a bit thin but should be just fine for bottle caps

Let's face it, the knife was designed as a wall hanger.  It's an art knife.  It's properly heat treated, and honed to a good edge; it could be used, but it never will be...

I would be to worried to hurt something that gorgeous.

Dale I'm not trying to be mean to you or anything but I did use the search feature and didn't find anything if you would have read the comment carefully. Also, twi weeks ago you said you don't care anymore and haven't talked to me since, so why are you telling me that again now? When you search soup can forge, tons of stuff comes up but nothing about what I am looking for. Also, even if I did find a post on how to make one, I learn better by watching someone instead of following a set of directions. I wouldn't be posting this if I could find the answer in the search feature.

It's not specifically about soup can forges but there has been posts recently that covered the plaster/ sand home brews and using castable or ceramic blankets. Searching can be tricky if you get specific, just gotta start skimmin posts in the right category.  Good luck with your gas unit though I have been procrastinating with building my freon tank forge with other projects.

Actually, a bean can forge would use a 1/4" burner. A 3/8" burner would only work even in a coffee can forge by turning it down most of the way. There is something to be said for using some kinds of jewelry torches in miniature forges, but you must be careful to keep them from overheating.

    Forging Carver,

If you want to get hold of a two gallon size helium cylinder or non-refillable refrigerant cylinder and build a proper knife forge, I will post instructions on this forum for building my latest (generation six) high speed tube burner.

IDE be interested In seeing this, getting around to building a burner soon ( hopefully soon lol)
