Lancaster? That place seems to ring a bell...
J
nope never heard of it
Welcome to the site, there are several talented smiths in your area and the surrounding. Look into PABA

$30 a pop? Wanna come to my shop and make Damascus for me? I can offer payment in CNY, PKR or INR - very competitive wages, and I don't believe in beating my employees unless they actually deserve it.
J
generous offer, but ill just come by sometime and show to make some

He musta hit submit while I was typing lol

Welcome to IFI , the support group for people with metal working addictions ( we support your new addiction and will help you on your way down the rabbit hole ). I will steal frostys thunder and say if you add your general location you may be surprised how many local smiths there are in your area!
-
Or throw some 15n20 in there and make some damascus hooks only $30 a pop!
-
Some s hooks out of 5160 would probably take some abuse, but I think I will save my carbon steels for tools and the like though.
-
Ahh, that would make sense
-
Wait, SR you don't make your s-hooks out of 1095??
-
It's ok I will just make Marcy help me !
-
I bolted mine down with lag bolts and a peice of flat bar drill holes just out side of the feet and it's pretty quiet makes a bit of noise when you work the horn but it's pretty quiet just a thud most of the time unless your getting cold
-
Haven't weighed it yet actually 24-32 oz probably. Can't wait to try it out on the new fisher
-
That finished up nice. What did you do for heat treat? Heat treating is pretty much my main reservation for hammer making. I've reforged a couple before (including a diagonal pien I drew out the wrong way) and I usually end up tempering them back too much out of caution.
i normalized after forging, then heated to a low orange and quenched in slightly warm veggie oil, tempered at 375 for about and hour

You are right Thomas I will not be beating on any "hers" but I will have fun beating on IT and bringin some life back to it.
-
Heh heh yup that's the stuff
-
Welcome to your new addiction joe! You got a nice start more than a lot of us started with, awesome that it has all been passed down, now get some metal hot and start cleanin up your tools
-
Can't wait to try it out gonna bring a new stump for her today.
-
If you read the blueprint on basic metallurgy it will make sense why it's so hard to move.
-
Well you have experienced how much harder carbon and other elements make steel . I would use my 4# by myself or am 8 if I can get someone to hold (biggest I have with a handle just need patience and only work it HOT .

I believe the same company that makes the magic smoke that makes electronics work make the weld glue. :)
-
I hope that's not to technical
-
Don't squish out the magic weld glue !!

Good point Charles I do have a disk on my bench grinder so isn't to hard I have moded a couple engineers hammers into makeshift rounding hammers.
-
The face is flat no crown, but the edges are rolled off. Gonna test it out a bit before I grind any more off.

I can imagine, exquisite in picture, have to be true works of art in person.
