  1. invest in a 4.5" angle grinder and a bunch of flap disks........life will be easier

have one, those pics were after some rough grinding on the wheel, hit it with some 220 on a disk to clean it up a bit.

That'll do! Now you'll have to make another with the pien the other way too. :D

Did you have an intended purpose for it?

no intended purpose, just wanted to try my hand at making a hammer, marcy now has a diagnal to use, were gonna tag team another and make a bigger one next.

finishedish, not the best handle but it will due.

  3. Cool. It's addictive making your own tools. The hardest part is punching the hole. From there it's much more smooth sailing. Heehee now make another one....... or ten. You might want a little more radius on the edges of your face. Looks nice, congratulations.

I got ideas  for the one, im gonna make marcy help me B) can't wait to try it out, i have to light the forge to treat it in the morning, so who knows what may happen.

  4. So we fired up the forge today and i used a section of torsion bar to make a small hammer, ended up with a diagonal peen, trying out the hammer eye drift i made abit ago. To my surprise i actually punched the hole pretty strait and got both sides lined up very nicely, by far the best hole i have punched, have a bit more grinding to do in the morning before heat treating.

  5. I'm not expert in this area as I'm building my gasser now, but you are insulating it to keep heat in so the more(to an extent) insulation the better. I am just planing on using kaowool, and coating it with a kiln lining hardener such as itc100.  Some people just throw the fiber blanket in there and light it up. I'm not sure about refactory but it would do the same as the itc100 in a way, reflect heat back away from the blanket towards the center.

  6. Bad pun? I guess if a person didn't get it maybe even then puns are the highest form of humor. The more dirty socks thrown the better it was. Still in this age of enlightenment there are folk who who don't play with words. I guess they just don't know how much pun it is.

The header I speak of is accessed in your profile. You can post an Avatar pic and list your location. I have as much smart in my phone turned off as I can so I can't help there.

    Frosty The Lucky.

Some people just don't appreciate a good joke anymore, going to the way side like the theater. I actually did a Theatrical preformance about puns, it was a play on words.

  7. All good advice , I would go to your local hardware store and get a cheap stone to practice with. After some practice I am getting great results with a $5 stone. Not suitable for a razor but a fine edge for a knife , with more time finishing it could be but why do that for a knife, first couple cuts threw something tough and the razor edge is back to being just sharp. It doesn't take anything fancy to get a good sharp knife edge , just patients and consistency of the angle.

  8. I aspired to make a hammer my first forge, but when it was done it was a little on the light side and had a bend in it, but get it hangs my keys great !! B)

If I were to get a new hammer when I began IDE have to go 2.5# rounding hammer

  9. Nick, a burner isn't all that hard to put together. However locating decent insulating material for your forge might be. When I went to build mine originally, I bought regular fire bricks that Fizzano's down the street had in stock. These are hard bricks, not the soft insulating bricks. They take forever to heat up and suck down a tremendous amount of fuel. Because of this my forge really didn't do so good. I'd get things hot, but not really all that hot, certainly not hot enough to forge weld.  Don't bother buying the hard bricks, they aren't worth it. If you really want to buy some, let me know. I'll sell you the ones I have. You will want to invest in either soft insulating bricks, or insulating blanket like Kaowool. To get these, you'll have to order what you need. Wayne Coe here has all that stuff if you want to order some.

I've been kicking around redoing my gas forge. I've got one of the Reil style burners I built, as well as one of Steve Gesheimer's that I bought from him at one of the PABA meetings. Eventually I'd like to pick up a 2nd one of his burners possibly and build a forge similar to his 2 burner forge I posted up in the Smiths of NJ thread. I just need to find some decent flat sheet and buy the 2" insulation and coatings if I go that route.

Thanks for the info Doug, i have some hard bricks ( hey i didnt know any better at the time ) i think im leaning toward the kaowool. i got a refrigerant tank to cut apart waiting so the blanket is probably my best bet, unless someone has an idea im not thinkin about.
