I use a similar eye punch I made . It drives pretty straight, I got off to a bad start, twisted it before I had it buried and drove it deeper than I would have liked . I will take my time more on the next and make sure I'm straight before I start smashing it

It's really not that bad, it will smoke a bit at first but if you got a good wood fire going first then slowly ad green coal you will hardly notice it. Make sure you have some coke left at the end of each session and the paper will smoke the most the next time you light it up, I pondered the same thing not long ago, once I switched I realized it was not a concern for me at all.

the eye is a bit off center on the bottom, comes out in the center uptop. it was worse at the beginning, corrected it some forging , its still there, but i am just being critical of my work. i will have to try using the pilot holes on the next the one, which will be VERY soon.

Had a random day off of work so decided to not let the heat and humidify defeat me and lit the forge this morning. 2.75Lbs of 4140, cross peen, differential heat treat to straw. Its far from perfect, the eye is a little crooked but its not to bad so it should still swing just fine, cant wait to try it out now.

Good question, and welcome to the your new addiction! I thought about this same thing when I first started a couple years ago, and I must say my right arm gets a good work out swinging the hammer, but my left is right there with it. Long or hefty pieces of steel will give your non hammer arm a surprising work out. I did a hammer not long ago out of 1.75" 4140 , hot cut it off a longer peice and my holding arm was more tired from manipulating the steel than my right swinging a 6#er.

Looks like the edges are to sharp on your drift round the edges a good bit but you can still keep it rectangular overall. Post a picture of the punch you used also if it is different. You make have wanted to let the checks of the eye pert rude instead of keeping them even with the rest of the spike.

A quick question about the peens of cross/diagonal peen hammers. which is better, a more radiuses peen or more narrow peen? I understand that less surface area contact is better, so maybe a narrower peen? I personally like the look of a fatter peen, but in the end function out ways looks.

Looks fine to me, the fisher in the basement is a lot rougher than that and is treating us fine.

That makes sense Thomas eggs from the store certainly are not "fresh". Last time I did it I used as much as I could dissolve in the water about a gallon , was just a couple small cable knives. Worked for me.
Brine quench is more harsh than oil and could cause some issues with those alloys that like oil.

I believe it is enough salt to float an egg in it and room temp (65f) but I'm sure someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in, but that has worked for me on a few things that I have brine quenched.

Nice work! Did you pick up a bit of techniques when you visited rthibeu? Also, did you grind the radius of the peen or form it with a swage. I know a lot of guys do it different ways.
i got inspired to make some hammers out at richards, and he gave me the 4140 , then we came home and i had a couple lessons from crazy ivan, stole his large radius peen, really liking it. it was just ground on a belt sander, could be forged into a swage and cut down the grinding.

I'm by no means an expert or a farrier but it looks like a farriers anvil to me from the skinny waste and shape of the heel . Could feel a little more "springy" than a thicker wasted shop anvil.

It was just over 4 1/4 inches of 1 3/4 inch round 4140. Squared it up a bit with round edges before punching the eye.
