  1. Thanks everyone. Nespor, I did this one by stock removal but I used my champoin rivet forge to heat treat it. I didn't make the damascus for the bolsters. Hope you guys don't mind that it wasn't actually forged. I am working on a couple forged blades and I am going to try my hand at some small damascus billets this spring. Mainly for guards and pomels. I don't have a really big anvil so forge welding a big billet and drawing it out is going to be way to hard.
  2. Hey guys, finally getting some more work done at my kitchen table knife shop :) I just finished the sheath for this one today. This is my 4th knife and 3rd shieth. O1 tool steel Cocobolo scales Black liners Real silver spacers between black spacers Mosaic pins Damascus bolsters There are 21 pieces in this handle. I hand made the shieth.   3. That's kinda why I said I wasn't sure about how I feel about this. Seeing all these anvils potentially getting ruined erks me. It took me a long time to find an affordable anvil that wasn't beyond my repair.

  5. That's pretty cool man :) a fellow I met a few months ago was using that process to clean out the rust from a gas tank.

  8. I believe Rich was making sure it didn't air harden, which it didn't. So that's why he moved to oil. After the oil quench it was hard so there was no need to go to water then brine. When your testing mystery steels out its a good plan to start with the mildest quench and that would be air. Hope that helps man.

  10. Hey everyone, been a while since I got any work done. I finally had the chance to work on this one lase week and got it all done. This is my third knife. I hope it's ok that I didn't forge this one although I did heat treat it in my coal forge. Let me know what you guys think!   13. I just make sure I give mine a good shot of oil in the oiler every half hour of use. When my dad cleaned it all up he greased the bushings too. Seems to be working pretty good. I don't think you "need" to have the gear case filled up. Just make sure your giving it a squirt of oil here and there to keep it lubed up. Besides the fan shaft there's really nothing in a blower that turns fast enough to need a constant oil bath. That's just what me and Dad do and it works for us. If I knew no oil would leak out I would fill it up but I bet it will leak. My Mom would probably kick my rear if that happened lol.
  14. Hmm so there still is a chance that this isn't an anvil. I've searched and searched for a picture of what we have and have found nothing so far. I hate not knowing for sure lol.
  15. I was checking out some pictures of some railroad bridge anvils and they all seem a lot different then this thing. I would love to see the picture in AIA is there any way you could post it?

  18. No way! My dad just got that exact same thing a few weeks ago! He's using it for an anvil when we forge! I was thinking that maybe it was some type of ballast or something. That's neat.
  19. Tempering twice is a pretty good practice so I would assume that it would be done. Testing the hardness isn't going to tell you if it was tempered once or a hundred times because after the transformations are done and your left with no un tempered martensite re-tempering at the same or lower temps will do nothing to the steel. Seeing that's its got such a small amount of carbon makes me think that either way its not really going to matter. With only .3% carbon the metal isn't going to be overly brittle even if it was not tempered.
  20. Be carful with the magnet trick. The magnet won't stick after 1414f and that's not the temp you want to quench at. Most steels need to be quenched at 1450-1475 so I like to use the magnet and go a shade brighter, hold for a minute and quench. If your using a file I would use a light oil like canola or water both should be warmed up to 120-160. Oil is safer then water because of the rate of cooling. Another point about the magnet is when the steel reaches 1414 it won't stick BUT it will continue to not stick till it is nearly black. To bad you don't have another one to test with. Don't forget to normalize it a few times too.
