this what i do i find the guys who bring the stuff in also watch for the guys picking up metal out of garbage and from repair shops those guys are selling to those big guys and tell them what you are looking for and that way you can bypass the scrap yards i think the scrape yards are paying around $4 hundred so if you top that price they will sell it to you and keep an eye out for things you need

it will help if click on "User CP" at the top of the page and edit your profile to show your location that way there may be some one in your area that may have one or give some good ideas were one maybe as for ebay most go for way to much money in my opion then again i'm cheap and think that 150 is to much for an anvil unless its biggggg as for what you pictured there there nice anvils had used one this past sat at a demo and it was nice and quiet i have found a few on craigslist for less then 125 bucks bought both of them and ebay is world wide so shipping my cost alot and with ebay every triples in the last 5min just checked it out on ebay it says it 70 pounds for $299 thats more that $4 a pound plus $85 shipping not that anvils sell per pound but the ones i bought are in the 150-170 range i paid $100 for a 140 pound peter wright and $125 for 170 pound fisher

seems cheap to me i have a cast hofi and love it think i will save for the smaller one as its to big for some of the small stuff and as if they are copys i'm sure mr hofi could in form us if they are or not and i thought you had to go through him to get them

my peter wright don't have any circle on it and the horn is different i'm thinking its some thing else but than again i'm not an expert or even close to one as for what you paid you didn't say what you paid but in my opion i'm cheap and will waint for the deal i like i refuse to pay more than 150 but than again i live in jersey (and your not that far either)were there were anvil manufacturing in the tri state area so i have seen alot of anvils for sale the thing is do you feel you got a good deal

i like the fisher anvil idea i had never used one till this weekend at the demo i did . it was quite wish i brought mine to make more ringing to bring more people in but it still has people around my town talking about the blacksmith that was there so maybe the town will get back to some of the roots of the town that time has forgoten

thank you there bigjohn as for the brick set it was a spure of the moment i was at home depot looking at punches and such thinking of what i could use as it was friday night about 9 and i was going home to machine a hot cut to fit the anvil that wasn't mine and i looked done and said lookie here i bet that will work and it did think i will make it fit my anvils now

well the big question would be what the blades are made of they make them out of alot of different metals depending were they come from i have honda mower and its got some tough blades on it and i bought some blades for another mower and they wore out in a year but i checked ebay and there selling sets of them for that mower for 30 bucks with free shipping

rob as for the blower me and my buddy add that on wensday when i got the forge unloaded (as i just bought it tuesday)we got it up and running and we add it to keep the fire going it has a dimmer switch on it it came off a natural gas smelting furnace its bolted to a hole through the forge pan its not hooked to the blower just against it worked great when i needed the heat i used the hand crank as for the hot cut it worked a lot bedder then i thought picked it up at home depot for 8 bucks they have different sizes i figured if it would last the day but it held up with no markes other then some blueing i haven't used a hot cut since high school metal shop (do they even have that anymore in the schools )as i just use power tools at home but thats not practical frosty the buggie wheels were on the forge when i got it tuesday the old gentalman i got it from said when he got it they were on it he couldn'tremember when he got it but did tell me he haddent used it in 20 years the straight wheels were shot and he gave me 2 more to replace them with and the buggies just took them off and and greased them it was nice to clean up with those wheels put every thing in the forge and bushed it back across my buddys lot but it was fun talking with every on and forthe noit all he was a fireman that said theNYC fire company had there own blacksmith shop and was commenting on me using a pipe madral for bending the hooks around said i should hammer them around the horn and thats the right way i was taught what ever way works for me so i did that

well drako you got alot more time to get ready then i did but it was fun i would have some stuff made up before you get there that helps them see what you do i had nothing made up as i only had a few days to get it together so as i made hooks and the first cross i put them out on the table and it seemed to gather more people after that and standing there for 6 hours swinging a hammer it gets rough i'm little out of shape i guess but it was really the kids that made it fun there

it was a town fair theam of pirates as we are a old shore town that had pirates back in the day there were crafters and food venders alot of stuff for the kids to do and such not really a blacksmith them to say of but the town had a big blacksmith shop back in the day so i guess you could say when they sailed in to port here they may have had the blacksmith make something the place i was at is my friends parking lot and he has a furniture refinshing shop there and also has a machine shop were he restores turn of the century motorcycles so it kinda fit in with his bissness

i have a small vise that looks that way i haven't fixed it yet and the reason it is like that is from the 2 hundred years of use the scew and the box has been closed to tight and bent the posts on both sides check to see if the post are streight from the pivot to the jaw it may have the same problem as one of mine if you had a side view of the vise from the ground up it would help see it on mine i'm gona put in a press and bent it streight again

did my first demo today after all the years i have been playing with blacksmithing i have never done it for fun it was always done cause i need this or that or some paying job anyway it went well had alot of fun talking with people and i only had one know it all so it wasn't bad i made some hooks and i also made my first cross well i made 2 sold one for 20 bucks and some hooks for 5 bucks i just wish i had more time to get ready my buddy came up up with the idea of this on wed to do this on sat the town was having comunity fair called pirates day and i had to adapte things to get the job down (i know i'm going to hear the jokes of the brick set i was using for a hot cut) heres some pics let me know what you guys think of the first croses i made

have you considered a dc motor there varible speed and cheap if you know were to look the one i'm going to build is with one and i have most of the parts just havn't started puting it together yet for motors my buddy and i have been using tredmill motors most are 2-3 hp and you can find them in the garbage and craigslist you just have to make sure its a dc motor not the ac most i have gotten are dc though and theres most times the wiring diagram is in side and if its the digatal ones you can wire in the right switch and radioshack has them

you can get router controler at harborfreight for 20 bucks if theres one near you can go to there web site and order one

thomas it does go kinda thud and heres beter pics of all the stuff we picked up me and my buddy split the buy he took the anvil as i have 2 anvils any way and he has none and i took the forge and coal some tongs a home made buffer and theres a pic of a big gate hook i forged out of stainless just cause i had to make it all work when we got itout of the truck at my buddys and for the stump it was just something we had its to small as you can see

picked up this forge with blower and anvil (170 pounds)for 250 bucks and about 10 buckets of coal not sure why the guy i got it from had a brakedrum in the forge the fire pot and clinker breaker are in perfect condition not sure of who made the anvil i have seen them before but can't remember so if anyone knows let me know i will get beter pics tomorrow these are the ones the guy selling them had the anvil has to mounting holes on the base and a tool steel plate

for your ground wasps at night fill there hole full of cooking oil a extermanator friend told me about it and has worked for me so far
