  1. Off and running I would say. Now the practice starts :)
  2. Good points Richard BUT it all comes down to why you forge. If you are into making stuff for money buying tongs and other tools would makes lots of sense because time is money. However, if you are like me and forge for a hobby then simply making the tool is a great project in itself and if you make a set you can stand looking at because they are not too ugly and the two pieces are similar if not the same then you are making real progress.
  3. I make my own as they are a great exercise in forging in themselves, that is my excuse. My friends say I'm too tight to pay for them :)
  4. Try Googling "iron bloomery" or "iron smelting" and you will get lots of leads. The setup is very different to the open forges we use.
  5. Its only a matter of time before we take this forum over Welcome to IFI, look forward to your input. Also have a look at the info on the Hammer In http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f13/...d-moonys-6559/
  6. Welcome to the site. Lots of knowledge here for you to tap into. Cheers
  7. Welcome to the site Look forward to the "new" design.
  8. Welcome to the site My advice is to start really simple and build up, don't rush it and practice the same technique till you have it down, then move on.
  9. Another Aussie on the forum Pity about Brissie in summer. Welcome to IFI mate!!
  10. The sword is surprisingly light. It could be hung in the same way as any other artwork.
  11. Setting yourself a big target with wheelwrighting there Kiwi. Welcome to the site from across the ditch :)
  12. Make sure you spend plenty of time in the Getting Started articles then work your way through the simpler BluePrints then you will be well on your way.
  13. Welcome to the site, we will look forward to your contributions. As for gas forge info, have a look at Mr. Reil's Home Page Cheers
  14. Welcome to the site Veljko. Lots of information here for you to get going with :)
  15. Welcome to the site Mike. Lots of knowledge tucked away in the corners of this site for you to tease out :)
  16. Welcome to IFI. Lots of ideas to try in the Blueprints.
  17. Any chance of getting instructional videos like this one hosted on IFI so they don't just get lost among the rubbish on YouTube, etc??
  18. Welcome to IFI Wil. You are right, the amount of free info on the web is astounding if you look in the right places.
  19. Good to have you on board Jim :)
  20. Welcome to IFI. Go the the Beginning section then the Blueprints. Start with the basic exercises of drawing points, making pokers and hooks then progress steadily. It is constant practice to get really good but most of us are time poor so it is a longer process. Just enjoy your forge time and keep us posted of your progress.
  21. Future projects are not a problem. Making the tools to make the projects keeps you busier than actually making the project. I wonder if you ever stop making tools?? I think not :)
  22. Love it! Thanks that type of info is invaluable to all in the hobby. We need more of it.
  23. I see reference to normalising but don't understand it. Annealing, hardening and tempering I understand but normalising?? Any help?
  24. Without getting into the legalities that don't apply here, it would make sense for any design to confirm to the current legislation. Working within that the deer design looks great and would suit the home of a hunter. Maybe making a smaller version within a "frame" of classic scroll work would work. My tow bobs worth.
