  1. Welcome to IFI. You are right in that forging is a relaxing activity if you don't put too many goals in front of you and just enjoy it, after all isn't that what you want from a hobby??
  2. Some really brilliant stuff in that site. Well worth a look. Thanx
  3. Maybe a defeatist attitude but I like to keep my hobbies as hobbies and not turn them into careers. When that happens then the gloss is very quickly knocked off. I would say make beautiful and functional knives then display them at shows and enjoy.
  4. Welcome to IFI. Plan well, measure twice and cut once :)
  5. Welcome to IFI Chris. Another Aussie :)
  6. Welcome to IFI. Looks like you will have lots of input as well as getting a lot from the other members :)
  7. I would not bother with it as any steel it would only produce would be of very questionable pedigree. Interesting exercise though.......
  8. Welcome to IFI Ixion. My advice would be to trawl through the Blueprints on making a foge and maintaining a fire then the getting started exercises and simple projects from the Blueprints. Practice, practice, practice the basics then get into the armour making.
  9. Dale, BYO would have to be the go otherwise the arguments over the flavour would be too intense :)
  10. The main thing I have found is not to hurry the heating. If the metal is thick and there is a scarf then taking the pieces out of the fire to allow the thin bit to cool then putting it back in allows it to heat right through and not only have the outside at welding temperature. If it is not hot all the way through then it cools too quickly for effective welding.
  11. Great plans for the forge. Have you thought of making the frame out of metal? Less likelihood of a fire that way. As for a dying art, I'm not so sure its any worse in Australia than the Americas. We have less people so there is gong to be less people doing blacksmithing, the ratio is probably not so different.
  12. Welcome to IFI Tom. My advice would be to start at the start and look at the Getting Started articles then practicing at the "boring" exercises before trying any bladesmith activities. You just have to have the basics before trying to soar like an eagle :)
  13. Welcome to IFI Steve. I lead a Cub pack and have often thought of a forging activity but the threat of the paperwork for burnt Cubs just stops me in my tracks.........
  14. Welcome to IFI Steve. Looks like there are enough members from here to start an Australian forum :)
  15. Welcome to IFI Capp. Pull up a stump and start reading, this site will keep you going for many weeks/months/years :)
  16. I find it amazing the controls people expect on "non mainstream" activities. Sure the anvil makes a bit of noise but compared to lawn mowers its chickenfeed but then mowers are expected in surburbia. Some people just like to complain.............. Try talking to your neighbours and get them to tell you if they are having guests and would like it super quiet. Maybe that will help.
  17. Welcome to IFI James. Grab a stump and start reading.......................
  18. Got the which end on to grab lesson again on the weekend Just seem to need reminding from time to time!! Welcome to IFI.
  19. I don't think the "extra" heat form the gun would do anything significant to a forge fire which is so hot by comparison. Its much simpler to pump in cold air and let the fire do its thing rather than having to keep watch on heating elements in a blower. My two bobs worth :)
  20. Welcome to IFI James. Lots of info here and really helpful members. Cheers
  21. Yep, that's right at the moment. Just click on the Blueprints link which will take you to the Blueprints page. The viable links are displayed there and will cause no problems. BTW, welcome to IFI :)
  22. Welcome to IFI David. Jame hit the nail on the head with the Getting Started articles then have a good look at the Blueprints, they will keep you going for years.
  23. Welcome to IFI Aaron. Don't forget to have a look at the blueprints, they are worth their weight in gold :)
