After any snide remark I always say "my grand-father lived to be 90". After getting a confused look from the customer they invariably ask me if my grand-pa was a blacksmith and I reply 'no but he did learn to mind his own busnessw and keep his mouth shut'.
That's a good one. :P -
Excellent step by step pics Lyle. Looks like you all are having a good time. :)

Download and save this pdf.

It has the tenon tool and several other cool tools. -
Wow, that's about 1/10th of new retail for that anvil. Fantastic deal!

Here are some pics. This set is from Tuesday and Wenesday. This was pure forging. Some people ended up making a few things but the main point was half hammer face blows. Brian got everyone to try it and the main response I heard was that people are not used to only hitting one time on each side. Everyone did great and we had a good time. https://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/BalconesForgeForgingClass#
This next set is the pics of the tool making on Thursday and Friday, then the pics of the Conference on Saturday and Sunday. John has a beautiful place, and a nice shop. Being able to work on a dirt or small gravel floor was great, while being inside the shop. The auction was great. These people know how to have a good time. Heres the rest of the pics. https://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/HammerClassAndDemo#
Lots of great pics as usual Lyle. Looks like a good time for all, wish I could have been there. -
Sorry, totally forgot to mention where I am. I'm in Waukesha, WI. Near Milwaukee for everybody not from WI! I tried Midwest Metal Wherehouse, and they were not happy quoting small quantites, and that I really didn't know what I wanted.
What you want for general smithing like hooks, brackets and whatnot is A36 Hot Rolled.
Here's their catalog http://www.midwestmetalonline.com/pdf/Catalog.pdf A36 starts on page 40. -
If Hofi is like me, he's somewhat flexible on what you call him. Just don't call me late for dinner. :D

That S&H is a real beauty.

I'm 99% sure that everything is hooked up right, but I'm going to check again tomorrow and figure it out! It's got to be a hook up problem.
It's that other 1% that bites you on the hiney. I'm glad to hear you've got it back up and running smooth. -
If the body is cast iron, coarse threads are recommended
I agree, coarse threads for cast iron. -
For those who don't have the book Thomas is referring to, it's free online at google books.

We ran 1 inch SCH 40 PVC to the compressor. It is about a 60' run!
You may want to reconsider using PVC for air. Do a google search on PVC air lines and see some of the possible dangers. I just want you to be safe. -
You can't polish a turd.....................
Tell that to these guys.

I'd love to see a tutorial here, given Cave Creek, Az. is far away from me
Me too. :) -
And, just a tip, for making chain, a pair of chaining tongs are a godsend. I finally made a pair today and it cut my time in half because I was no longer fumbling with the links in the fire.
I and probably others would like to see those chaining tongs. Sounds like they'd be real handy. Could you please post a picture. -
Most ring shank or spiral pole barn nails are of a higher carbon steel than common nails.

Is that the paint they use on the frigates?

Sometime something can be repeated so many times that it becomes accepted. Look at how many people still believe hot water will freeze faster than cold water.
Not always, but sometimes the impossible is possible.

I use a couple of TECO VFDs a 1hp and a 2hp from Factorymation, reasonably priced and work great. But the largest TECO 1ph in 3ph out I've seen is 3 Hp. I did find this though.

I think he meant non-magnetic.

A new scaling hammer like that, but with a fiberglass handle, would cost around $60.

It's used to tighten/loosen the clamp at the top of the handle allowing you to position it anywhere around the rim of the flywheel.
