  1. Thomas, If you go to the intersection of Holmes and Pulaski Pike next the the Parkway underpass you should be able to get a stump of most any size. I got a 28"ish by 24" wide oak log for my nephew for about $5.00. If you catch them when they have a great big tree that has not been split you should be able to get something custom cut. These seem to be nice guys that respond well to please, thank you and cash.
  2. Smoggy, Thanks for the info, when I come up with a "new idea" I like to bounce it off of other people. Mtnsttream, That is neat!!
  3. Good Morning Folks, I have been working on a VERY overbuilt vise and I thinking of using the screw and nut from a scissor jack. I (sadly) killed the first nut's threads with a stray weld and I am working on getting another mounted. I was looking at coil spring compressors on Amazon and I was wondering if anyone had used the that to replace a screw/nut in a bench or leg vise. Thanks in advance! Ernest
  4. You have a very nice setup. I would love to get a large Sweetgum stump since it is a nightmare to split. I set my nephew up with a large hickory stump.
  5. I suggest you email Travis and ask, he is a good guy! http://www.athensforge.com/index.html Before you spend any $$ if you want to try it I have a chunk of rail road rail that you can stand on one end. it is (I think) about 11" of 85# rail but it will need to angle grinder work done. This would be at no cost since you are trying to pick up the hobby. All I ask is when you are done with it give it to the next person.
  6. Hydrate PLEASE, on any given day there will be too many anvils around you that if you pass out there may not be any soft landing spots!!!!
  7. I think we need a photo of that! Sounds cool!!!!
  8. Thomas, Do you have an anvil or ASO yet? The Athens group is a great place with great folks.
  9. An aircraft carrier anvil, now that makes my inner 12 year old say NEAT!!!!
  10. Thank you much DSW, that is right nice of you.
  11. I find your idea to worth looking in to. I am looking for someone to install the 240 now so I can get the welder from Craigslist. There is an AC Lincoln Tombstone on CL that I am looking at right now. BigGun I have 2 more class III forks (7"x2"x24" and 48") to work on next. I want to make some anvils to take to the forge group for Iron in the hat. I think it would fun to make a striker anvil or 2 and give them to new guy.
  12. Frosty, The local welding shop was my backup just in case but as to the rest I have gotten burned with roofers using the BBB and yellow pages so I am a bit hesitant. Huntsville is right up there with the research triangle in North Carolina and that attracts many fly by night groups that have an "A+" in the BBB listing somehow. Like these reviews on Amazon that all sound the same but are different people. Any how, I will get the local welding shop next.
  13. Monkey, What kind of wood are you using for your scales? Your posts in the handle are great! nice looking blades.
  14. Good Afternoon All, Does anyone know a good electrician Huntsville Alabama? I need a 240 outlet installed in the garage. thanks
  15. Thomas, I think I am going with a Brian Brazeal style (foot down) until I have access to a bigger welder. Right now my 110 buzz box is only going to do so much. The night part is I can turn it over and do what Biggun is suggesting and fill in the gap on the overhang. At that point I will weld a base plate on to it. I am limited to 5/64 7014 rods. I was thinking about using a thinner bit of stock to bridge the two sections down the side like Biggun suggests. I figure I can grind a grove in to the side of each section to act in place of a bevel to get better penetration. Thanks to advice from Steve Sells I know will be able to use my little buzz box wide open from my generator w/o blowing the breaker. That is one of the other limiting factors I am dealing with it I want to weld on the "high" setting. I get about 3 inches and the need to reset the breaker. No fun at all. I will post a photo tonight.
  16. Jackdawg, This may be my American ethnocentrism showing but it is wild to think of Edison screw bulbs becoming popular now. Are the bayonet fittings the ones with a smooth shaft and studs that fit in to the socket? They do fit and the fact that I know take a broken light bulb out of the socket with potato id proof they do break!
  17. Martin, You can get started with 2 firebricks and a good size plumbing torch like a bernzomatic ts8000. Mr. Coe can fix you up with a starter kit.
  18. Alexandr, Your basic home light bulb is has a E26 base and the small lights such as candelabras, night lights and chandeliers use an E12 base. It looks like the E14 might not be the right size. What are you trying to do? Start here for a chart
  19. So does all that titanium make the TSA's scanner buzz when you go to the airport? I have always wondered if there was a limit to the amount of metal a person could have before generating false positives on the TSA's equipment. The TSA gave Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) a hard time for his cane that looked like a lightsaber. I figure if the think someone has a real lightsaber maybe they think you have a knife stashed in your shoulder. If you ever want to see what your taxes pay for and why the lines are long at the airport check out the TSA's blog.
  20. All, it sounds like I should go with the one on the right. Thanks for the input, it is nice to have some other people chime in before using up many angle grinder disc and flap disc and who knows how many rods!
  21. Forge, You might also list where you are, that will let people know if you are close to a given group or class. .
  22. Latticino, I was planning to use a large stump and sink it part of the way in to the stump and weld on some brackets to hold it in place. I am not going to mess with trying to harden the face since this is a retired forklift fork and I think I will mess it up if I try. It should be hard enough for what I want to do with it. I am going to make a plywood template to make sure I have a good fit. The plywood is easier to cut then the steel. Thomas, thanks for the input. I have seen how people mount RR Track like post anvils and I think that would work for this as well. As to how I plan to use it would be as a replacement for my current track anvil.
  23. Of the ideas I have here do you have a favorite shape?
