  1. Great to have you here. It will be nice here how you do things. Any idea may be a better way to do something than the way someone is doing it now.
  2. I mainly use a 2lb regular crosspien hammer for most of my work. But the hammer I like to use depends greatly on the work I am doing.
  3. Welcome to IforgeIron. It will be great to see pictures.
  4. Outside my shop in Taneytown, MD. Although the fence is where the back of my shop is now.
  5. Outside of my shop at Union Mills: The Mill race, Mill Water Wheel, The Homestead 1797, andanother shot of ther water wheel.
  6. I'm basically a hobby smith but sell my wares at re-enactments and other events doing demos. Not really a business. Tried getting a business license from the county, but since I don't keep stock on hand so I was considered a service instead. I do make stuff for re-enactment to take and usually sell out. then I will be out of inventory until the next one gets close.
  7. Great and glad to here it. Welcome to Iforgeiron. You'll find a wealth of info here to help get you started.
  8. Pictures of the bellows in my shop at Union Mills Homestead. Built in 2004
  9. Pictures of inside my shop at Union Mills Homestead. The forge was built around 1983. This build was actually the bark shed, where ground bark was stored for the tanning process at the tannery.

  12. I started at 39, when type 2 diabetes set in and was a little scared to take the field at re-enactments. Decided to pick up blacksmithing at re-enactment to have a controlled situation so as not to end up with a sugar crash on the field.
  13. Kook....like a couple of people I know
  14. Thanks I'll have to check around. Now do you actually have a blacksmithing business or just a hobby smith? I notice it says commercial property and commercial general liabilty.
  15. That goes for the same, if in a house being built and you find a spackling bucket in the basement. don't touch!!!
  16. Heck I'll follow the truck till one does. Although with gas prices it would be cheaper just to buy one.
  17. My dad was dumpster diving long before recycling became the thing to do. He would bring home cans, cardboard, newspaper, food. By the end of the week we had enough to buy breakfast after we dropped it off at the salvage yard. So I have been dumpster diving for about 37 yrs. Had alot of meals from those grocery store dumpsters and alot of wine made from the fruit they would throw out. It's amazing what people throw out. Once we got a box that had 4 old railroad lanterns in it.
  18. Do they have a name for this type of insurance? That way I can check with some local companies. I'm sure there is a Farmer's Mutual around here.
  19. What's the companies name and what is the cost roughly? I know it would probably be different in my area.
  20. You can also get some heavy duty springs, but too strong where you cannot stretch them. Attach one end of each spring to the anvil heel end of the stump or stand. If using a stump, lag bolts are sufficient. The other end of the springs attach to either chain or some strong flexible material in order for it form and put strong downward pressure on the metal. This way when needed, lay the cold end toward the heel and pull the holddown up and over the heel and on to the metal to keep it in place.
  21. I'm actually looking for insurance to cover me when I demonstrate and sell at events. Basically looking for some sort of liability insurance to cover me.
