  1. Boat plank clamp? Woulda never guessed! Agreed that it wouldn't have much use in the shop - just wondered what it might have been used for
  2. Any thoughts? http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/tls/1989085830.html
  3. I'm in awe John! You've got a very steady hand - I can't cut a clean shape to save my life!
  4. Looks like the short cousin to a Misery Whip - you can quick-cut a lot o' wood with one if you keep it sharp!
  5. Nice work John! Bummer about the misspell - - What about the dates? I'm not saying this to be flip . . . a number of years ago I cast a bunch of plaques for a park bench project and when delivery time came it was; "Uhmmm, you've spelled the name wrong" - quick trip to the ol' design documents and there was the client's initials next to the approved spelling - Took them back, melted them down and recast at their expense - delivered again - - they mounted them to the benches and someone pointed out that they had the date wrong as well! They didn't have me recast them again . . . .
  6. Have a great time Clinton - Yes, more pictures please! I remember taking a scuba trip in a friend's '63 "Transporter" (the one with the windows around the top - he named it Mr. Scott) - Three guys, all our scuba gear and normal tripwear - 900 mi round trip, top speed of about 56 mph - we were NOT popular on the freeway but it was a great little ride and never hiccuped once!
  7. Dave, Congrats on the new space - What a great setting! Give an ear to Bob and Thomas and set yourself up right for lifting load - besides the safety aspect, just having a solid, easy to use lifting system makes a whole lot of things so much simpler. Keep those pics coming - you're an inspiring young fella regarding your passion and commitment to the craft!
  8. Great job on the forge body and hood and nice shop Kevan! That hood is drawing so well you may want to take care letting small children or animals near it - you could end up with a bit of an obstruction
  9. Ohh, I do admire's me a thinkin' man! I've been in a lot o' shops but I gotta say, I'd almost (almost) pay money to have a chance to forge in your setup - I love it! The fact that the wife is the one who spray painted the name and warnings is what they call PRICELESS!!
  10. Yeah, I tried to steer her that direction but she likes chunking that stapler up against my forehead . . .
  11. She leaves it lying around? Dang, my GF has taken to writing it backwards then tacking it to my forehead so every time I look in the mirror I can't say I didn't see it . I haven't combed my hair in weeks . . .
  12. Now that's funny! If you ever do - take a pic. We can title it "Harvest time for the blacksmith" That's the spirit!
  13. Cool Sam! Do you have kids? I'm thinking family business . . .
  14. Glenn - not here, I was just trying to get my lawn mowing finished - but it sure looked to be a welder's moon to me!
  15. " Meaning that my tools/forge stay dry and I get wet." Well shoot, that just means you built it right!
  16. Nice score Dakota! I started out with a piece of bent I-beam and was thrilled to have found it! But remember, if the rail-cops show up, DROP THE RAIL before you try to run . . . (Please don't ask how I know this)
  17. James - Don't ever hesitate to post anything you think we'd like to see - this last video was a great little piece of the action - I thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciate your putting it up. My earlier posting was meant to be tongue-in-cheek and if it set a tone regarding safety issues in Chinese industry, that wasn't my intent . . . I'm starting to get a little gun-shy around here because it seems if you so much as open your mouth, a cavalcade of comments regarding the critical socio/economic/political ramifications of your point of view come pouring forth - Given the way some topics lately have taken on a "runaway nuke" aspect, maybe a little lightening-up is in order. But then again . . . that's just my opinion . . .
  18. Great Vid James! I like the way they flip the block by catching one edge and giving a push back up on the anvil. Given the lack of hearing protection, I can just imagine the hammer operator's typical evening at the dinner table; "How was your day honey?" . . . "WHAT?" Would you like some more tea?" . . . ."WHAT?" It sure was nice today . . . "WHAT?"
  19. Nice! It's a great art-car, any video of it cruising around? The forging's were real simple - we did the "spine/spike" and the bowl that the sphere (heart) sat in - I also made a mold out of plaster so she could form the plexi- sphere The piece resides at her home in Portland Or.
  20. Brian, She was real pleased with how it came out! She hosted several open invite sessions to sew the fabric parts - each fabric piece had a pocket into which she placed small amulets - folk would take one as a gift then leave tokens or items of their own for others to have - kinda like "Emotional Geo-caching"! Here's a couple of it in the daytime
  21. Oops - Correction to the photo credit in my earlier post: The top pic (B&W) is credited to: Andrew Wyatt
  22. Nice contraption FC! Is that a flame cannon coming up off the side?
  23. You haven't mentioned whether you're going to put an anvil shaped cutout in the door or if it'll be a one or two holer. . .
