  2. now I know what my anvil is.feller gave it to me several years ago the base had been busted off and sombody had welded a big piece of channel iron to the bottem.still weighs in at about 100# tho
  3. I too am building one and am using a car torque converter for the pot.cut around the seam w/grinder and zip blade.it is heavier than I figgered it would be.
  4. Gundog when I rivet a spur rowel in place I use a shim of thin metal.remove the shim and the rowel turns free.might try that on your tongs an see if it helps.tin can should work soda pop can if it is not hot.cut out a rectangle and notch it out to go around the rivet
  5. Dang ! you done good.now here it comes, sure like your forge have you thought about cutting the opening bigger?just the upper corners say at a 45degree angle from the bottom it should give you a bit more access.hit the pawn shops and find a bit bigger hammer and shorten the handle like you are use to and you won't have to work quite as hard.them other fellers are right about the tongs, you do good work, tongs should not be a problem for you. hit the auto salvage yards for jack handles or pop oult some old trunk lid springs.they used to be 3/8 round rod not sure on the newer ones.you will need to use a BIG screwdriver to pop them out..again good job,be careful
  6. I was Lead maint man for several years and took some classes on gear boxes.the oil level should be up to the bottem of the shaft,to prevent leaking and for expansion on boxes that turn fast enough to get hot.those also had breather plugs or caps.fill on the high side ,check on the low side
  7. Tundra,do you plan on using clay or mortar in your forge?
  8. looks good.the disc that I have on hand are not that deep.gonna have to go prowling
  9. I'm sorry should have been more specific.yep wheel spindle.
  10. boy if you could get hold of a wheel spindle, you could make that socket
  11. Waldgiest, did you paint that on while they were warm, hot, or cold?not familiar with this type of darkining, thanks a bunch,Edward
  12. thems is purty! how did you end up with a good color to them? they do look good
  13. foot switch from a sewing machine should work
  14. something for ya'll to think about is a gearbox from a front tine tiller.the square plate the tines bolt to is where you would hook up a pitman arm.then drive off either of the other 2 shafts
  15. I am with Iron Woody on the heat.it helps.also whatever tool you have to use on the bolt heads wrench socket or screwdriver, smack the bolt heads a few licks seems to loosen most bolts.if there is a nut on it,turn the nut not the head .the nut will usually turn before the nut.luck
  16. not sure about learning books but our small library can get on line an borrow from different libraries.just need the name an author
  17. I just got on here to ask the same question.some fellers built me a round one in the early 70's using a split-rim truck rim, truck differential cap and a buffalo forge blower and the cast iron bottom from an old forge from a ranch I was raised on.I loaned it to my Dad a few years before he passed and I don't think I will be able to get it back.I am capable of building my own.cut ,weld mud what ever.which is handier, square or round? Me an Abeck are needin the same help.an you fellers seem to be the best around to ask.thanks
  18. the main source of flat strap galvanized was from telephone poles, the braces that braced the top cross beam.bout 3 ' long1/4 thick 1'1/4 wide 1 bolt hole on each end
  19. used to be a company called Industrial Abrasives. good people, buy a dozen get a free dozen.
  20. Bois de arc or Osage orange I think is the prettiest wood there is.for a finish,an old gunsmith told me to rub it w/ another piece of wood it will shine it up an there is some oil in it.sure pretty
  21. look online at wood working tools for a picture of a hold down,it may even be called a hold fast.the shank needs to fit the hole in the table top or anvil fairly close so it will bind in the hole to hold down your work
  22. sure neat forge. some thing to think about,'bout 74 or 75, I made a hood for my forge,we had a real old feed grinder that had a cone and an dust remover? I cut off the cone it had 6" pipe feeding it.flopped it over anput it thru the shop roof above the forge.seems like at the widest it was 24 to 30"
  23. some people also called it a frame drill.for drilling holes in truck frames an such, for fish-plating
