  1. Maybe the buyer could level the face with wood putty. :D
  2. If there is a Fastenal store or other fastener supply store near you, then you might want to stop in and talk to one of the guys at the sales counter. They might be able to find you a fastener that is not listed on their web site. On the other hand, can you drill the nut and bolt and lock it in place with a cotter pin or roll pin?
  3. If you don't have the tools to make a handle, you would arrange with a local blacksmith to make one.
  4. Farm stores have mineral oil in gallon containers, check Tractor Supply Company Mineral Oil, 1 gal
  5. These suggestions are right-on. I have never seen a room or house construction that was *exactly* as drawn. Don't assume anything is as specified until you measure it. Please, Please. :D
  6. Great job! Here in Pennsylvania they have a variation called a Sticking Tommy.
  7. It also depends on your schedules. If their office is only used between 9 to 5 and the shop is only used when the smith gets home from employment and on weekends, there may not be much of a conflict.
  8. Greetings, Since you live in New Hampshire you might want to find out about the New England Blacksmith association. Contact information for NEW ENGLAND BLACKSMITHS * Pres: Owen Bostrom 99 Chase Hill Rd. Ashaway, RI 02804 (401) 377-2611 [email protected] * Ed: Fred Mikkelson 23 Waterman Dr. North Scituate, RI 02857-2036 (401)647-3086 [email protected] * New England Blacksmiths
  9. Our house is about 100 feet from my shop and my wife says that she can hear me using a hand-hammer from the house, with the windows of the shop closed. The shop walls are insulated.
  10. Is it done yet? I am ready to see the pictures :D
  11. Looks like they would be very nice letter openers or camp knives. :D
  12. Can it be made into a drinkable substance?
  13. I use ball peens found in flea markets for banging on stuff that would possibly damage my better hammers.
  14. Since your, so far, one and only question posted on this forum is not about how to learn about blacksmithing, but is on what would constitute a nuisance when making horseshoes, is your question in reference to a neighbor making *horseshoes* ? On the other hand, if you want to learn about how to make horseshoes, and resources for specifically making horseshoes in your area, your best resource is a local farrier, local organization of farriers with the preference on attending a school for farriers.
  15. Here is a picture of the period correct nail making station that the Williamsburg smiths made in order to make large numbers of nails as quickly as possible. :D
  16. And the workmanship. At the end they seem to be using hand hammers to clean up the appearance of the head of the pin.
  17. Greetings Dave. I suggest connecting with your local blacksmithing group and attending their meetings and demonstrations. If possible take a course or two so as to quickly learn the basics.
  18. Frosty is right, try to connect with your local blacksmith group and go to their meetings and demonstrations. If possible take a class in toolmaking: chisels, punches, etc through your local blacksmith group so that you can learn to quickly and safely hammer out, harden and temper chisels, punches and other tools.
  19. Thank you all again, I get the point. I will be having them professionally repaired. Thank you. Dave E.
  20. Basically, my humble understanding is that if it burns and creates enough heat to bring iron to forging temperature then you can use it for blacksmithing. If given the choice of tossing wood into the forge and using it, or having a setup to convert wood energy to wood-gas, I would likely choose using wood in my forge. My concerns about converting wood to wood-gas include: - needing extra equipment and thus money, space, etc. to convert the energy - using time for the conversion - the challenges of finding the right nozzle size and gas forge conversions - storing, compressing and delivering the gas - and last but most important *safety* in the manufacture, storage and likely process of pressurizing a gas prior to use.
  21. Have you considered 2-Ton Epoxy, 1oz Tube by DEVCON, "Resistant To Chemicals, Waterproof, Extremely High Bond Strength, 2,500 PSI For Heavier Objects "? Amazon.com: Clear 2-Ton Epoxy, 1oz Tube: Toys & Games Years ago I called Devcon and asked what they recommended for holding a critical application of wood and iron together to keep the steel bearing in heavy canon wheels, they put the engineer on the phone and he recommended their two part epoxies. The longer the cure time the stronger the hold. I used some over lag bolts that held two security grates in place. First I glued the bolt in place, then covered the head of the bolts with round blobs of epoxy, then painted to match the grates. Remember, you don't have to make something un-stealable, just so difficult to steal that it is too much of a bother. :D
  22. Are you planning to use it with an over-the-head draw, or a cross-draw?
  23. If I were you I would first talk to whoever is overseeing the car's renovation and find out if they plan on removing the wood floor as part of the renovation. Since that is a critical part of the brake I would advise against taking any shortcuts. If they are going to be removing the floor, ask if the carpenter could remove a couple of boards prior to the move so that you can access any parts that need to be unbolted. If they are removing the floor later, you might consider cutting the part and making a new one for installation prior to the floor re-installation.
  24. Gosh, now it is too pretty to use!
  25. Click on the photograph to see larger image of an old semi-portable Buffalo coal forge. It is 2ft by 2ft with pass-throughs on the sides for the iron to sit in the fire a bit above the firepot.
