  1. Joalon, take a look at this page: http://www.metalsmithinghow-to.com/tutorials.cfm?page=http://www.metalsmithinghowto.com/content/Spikes/index.htm&content=82
  2. rdc--there is a bunch of smiths around Chicago. One place right in the city posted a note on anvilfire a few days ago. I'm south of the city about an hour. When you get settled in post here again and maybe we can work something out. Jerry
  3. Ralph, you're still on our Prayer list here so you can add a bunch of good Baptist believers to the number of people sending up requests for you and Dawn for well being and strength. Jerry & Carol
  4. The angiogram showed very little blockage--read good news! Exercise & diet will make a difference from now on. We still don't know what happened but at least we know at the first sign of anything now not to set around waiting for something drastic to appear. Thanks to all for your Prayers and concern--you're like family!!! Jerry & Carol
  5. 84 tons can really squish!! I ran big hydraulics (couple hundred tons) at the auto stamping plant I worked at for 35 years. I learned quick that they can be more dangerous than conventional presses--good luck with the new process. Your work is already outstanding. Jerry Carroll
  6. Beacher, your Mom is on our list too. She has been added to our Church online list that goes out at the time time of every request so Prayer from many is offered up. Jerry Carroll
  7. The Prayers are truly appreciated. So far the only damage found is at the bottom tip of the heart but the Doc's want to find what the cause was and prevent another, probably more damageing attack. 2 more tests are scheduled in the next few days with the 2nd being an angiogram. Prayer really works! Thank you all very much!!
  8. Why not have a piece to fit on the open end of the "U" with thumb screws or set screws to hold it on and support the ends of the "U"?
  9. My wife, Carol is having a bunch of tests done to determine the cause and damage from a heart attack. Please add her to your Prayers for recovery. So far the tests have shown some damage to the lower part of the heart and tests today (11-9) show it is working well enough to not warrant surgery! Thanks in advance folks! We know Prayer works--we have experenced it.
  10. I have a bunch of hickorys too & plenty of nuts! What the squirrels don't eat or hoard I put in a 50# seed bag with the shells on and as they dry the the shells pop open. The dry shells burn good in the wood burner.
  11. I just posted on http://www.metalworking.com/ 4 pictures of a foot operated vise owned by Richard Heinicke in Mich. He is trying to get some info about it. If anyone can help he can be contacted at ranvilh.com (his site) or post here  The pictures are listed below. Edit: photos added
  12. I'm in Momence, IL--South of Chicago--out in the farmlands 8) I'm from E.Ky. so when I visit "down home" I always go to one of the bunch of coal yards there and fill 2 big plastic containers from wallyworld that are $2 each that hold at least 100lb. of stoker & pay less than $2 per hundred lbs. for the coal. Sometimes I even get it free if a relative or old buddie is around. The coal burns as good as any I have bought elsewhere for a lot more $$$!
  13. Thanks guys for the quick answers! I figured I needed the preheat but didn't think about the rule on rod strength. I don't have access to a tig so I'm off to the welders supply today for more rod. In building the jyh hammer I'm using what materials I have or can trade for. The D2 was free! So far I've spent $10 and have just about all I need. It's coming together but slower than I thought.
  14. The blocks I'm welding are 3 1/2" square by 14" long. Good clean metal--edges to be welded beveled 3/16" making a V almost a 1/4" wide. For the root pass I used 3/32" 6011 rod--welder set on 90 amps with the blocks clamped together. To keep the heat down(D2--air hardening) I welded about an inch on each end in the middle and starting in the middle on each side alternating made 4 welds a couple inches apart. Each weld was peened immediately after lifting the rod. I had intended to use 7018 1/4" rod, more amps to finish the welding, the first welds tacking the blocks. When I took the clamp off, after cooling a while, the @#%$*%$ things make a cute little "ting" and most of the welds split. First time experence for me but then I've never used D2. Do I need pre-heat?? E-mails are welcome--click on profile. Thanks folks, in advance.
  15. I made my anvil devil from an old triangler 1/2" thick file. The tang end is cut off and the other, tapered end bent at 45* to hang through the hardy hole to keep it from jumping off the anvil and is loose fitting so I can position it. The teeth are ground off of course and the top edge lightly sharpened. The file was 10" long new & the cutting part I left 4" long.
  16. A friend gave me 4 14"x3"x3 1/2" blocks of D2 steel. I would like to weld them together to use as an anvil top plate for the "rusty" type power hammer I'm building. I understand D2 is air hardening. I'm wondering if the heat from arc welding thick pieces like these will make it too hard to drill for bolt-on dies or use as I hope to. The ram is 30 lbs. Adding these blocks will make the anvil close to 400 lbs.
  17. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, not just the spike knife but your site and books as well. I've been heating~beating metals for a long time and didn't realize the wealth of info available till finding Iforge & Anvilfire. What a great bunch of people I have found!!
  18. I found my sears farm forge on a patio being used for a planter! No handle-no ratchet blocks in the drive hub & other problems. I made the belt like Hollis sez and fixed the rest of the things and have used it for almost 15 years without having a problem with the belt. The pan has never been clayed and is not cracked even with some big fires, sometimes hours at a time. My biggest problem was putting new blades in the fan but I dunit & I like using it when I work out side. I'm not too far from you. If you're ever down this way--gimme a call & stop by.
  19. Dawn, Ralph is on our prayer chain here as well as you and the family for strength & guidance through the rough time that we know you all are experiencing. Ralph has been on our list since your first posting. May God Bless you all and be merciful. Jerry Carroll
  20. Did I do wrong soldering my handle to a medium size soup can??
  21. Ralph and Dawn both have been added to our Church Prayer list and my personal daily list here in Momence,IL. Jerry & Carol Carroll
  22. I'm from east Ky., Harlan to be exact, with relatives in east Tenn. & west Tenn. & Ky. Finley is just west of Dyersburg. I live in Momence, IL now, out in the farmlands south of Chicago but the South is home! :D
  23. Glenn, posting above should read "wonderful thought", hard to see through misty eyes.
  24. Wonder thought Glenn and I'm sure Sheri would treasure it.
  25. For PawPaw, The pain of parting will last while I'm still here but the joy of meeting again later will make up for it. See you at the Throne my friend. Jerry
