    Thank you--I have one of the 2 original tirehammers Stuart Willis and I built using a rough drawing from the fertile mind of Ray Clontz ,I have been using this hammer hard for 8 or more yrs. ..and made quite a few bucks with it and couldn't do without it :o :D

    That is very nice for a first attempt,I don't know if I would a try a sword,though I have been forging for a few yrs.I have made a few knives, and a sword is just a long knife, right? Nope more to it than that, anyhow great job!

    You should do the upsetting and slit and drift the eye first,before shaping the blade,cause that is hardest part to get right-If that don't turn out right,it goes in the scrap before you waste any more time...I usually mess one or two before getting one right--5/8" square ain't much,I have done a bunch and they ain't easy --Good Luck

    The Kayne drifts are fine,but don't let the head get cool.The drifts are made from ductile iron and are soft,if the head gets too cool it will peel the metal from the drift,I have 3 or 4 and they are all little mishapen.I think they are made more for wrap and weld heads---Regards Butch

    Yep you can really work the wax in with the wheel,you can heat the wax to apply to the wheel--Regards Butch

    Hi,I use a buffing wheel like you use on a car, on an old motor,load the wheel and lay into it---- Thanks for all the comments---Best Regards Butch

    The handle is curly maple-I get it as smooth as possible,I use Fiebings dark brown leather dye after sanding then use a propane torch to burn the color off then apply another coat and apply tung oil and rub with fine steel wool til I get the desired color then buff with beeswax....thanks and regards Butch

    Josh,that is one of the hardest things to get right,a lot of time on the belt grinder,and I use the edge of the belt a lot--and I use a 4 1/2"flap disc to start with,they are great for that-Thanks Regards Butch

    WOW,you have 4 walls!I have 2 walls in both parts of mine,fine for the summer but a little breezy in the winter,but you have to be tough to be a smith,right?Regards Butch

    Forgeing again after prostate surgery,been a month.probably too soon but had to do something before I cracked up----I forged this one from a piece of 1045-etched finish-filework-8 oz. leather sheath-nice piece of curly maple----Thanks for looking-Regards Butch
