I heat my shop with a woodstove the shop is 20' X 40'.

I was thinking the same thing Robert, carbide is the only way he will get that done.

Interesting Sam but I would have used a different steel. Looks good so far show more pics when its done.

When I was doing a lot of welding as a Lather, I was working on Splash Mountain at Diseyworld. We had 35 guys welding in the area of a 2 car garage I got a flash burn on the back of my neck that blistered and I also got flashed from the reflection coming off the inside of my lens a bunch of us had to go see a doctor. That was the most uncomfortable flash I have ever had, Thanks Glenn I feel old now. LOL You can get flash burn on your skin and it is like a first or second degree burn I suggest cover it all especially your eyes, they say welding flash can promote skin cancer.

it appears to be some kind of a punch set, the tongs are the tool holders. Just my guess.

Thomas Great explanation I could not have done it that well myself :cool:. With wrought iron since it lacks carbon for for hardening what I have done is work harden it to get the desired spring tension I needed. Wrought is very hard to find if you come across it never pass up the chance to get it, even if you don't want to use it others will gladly buy it from you. I only brought up wrought iron to get you thinking out of the box because we can also go clear to the other side, I know guys that use high carbon stainless steels as springs for slipjoint folders. It really depends on the use of the spring as to what steel I would use and your heat treat and temper are the most important factors in the performance of your spring IMHO.;)

Just thought I would add this, I have made springs from wrought iron that has little to no carbon. Also I know a guy that uses wrought iron to make springs for his kentucky style rifles.

Thanks guys these 2 have been a lot of fun. Yep Sam 2 knives . Hence the name. Bruce no I have not as I pick bone that does not have the checking that goes all the way through I also work it slow so I don't get it hot and I also drill it with a new bit and almost no down pressure let the drill do the work and clear the hole often.

Here is a couple in the works, I call them Kissing Cousins Bird and Trouts. These were made form a mosaic billet I made about a year ago. It is made of 1084,1095 and 15N20. The bolsters are 304 stainless steel and 308 stainless steel pins. the scales on 1 are dyed and stabilized giraffe bone the other is dyed and stabilized camel bone. These are not done yet but getting pretty close, I need to polish the bone and scales and remove the scales and etch the blades and reassemble.

Make great hoof stands for horse shoeing, I would make it in to a hoof stand and sell it for $50.

Could be 8670 modified blades, I would take a piece and heat treat it see if it gets hard but I think you may have scored. Can try and etch it after heat treat 8670 stays bright.

Depends on what they look like I get some from a friend of mine and he had some tested they are 8670 modified similar to L6 bandsaw steel is 15N20. Have a picture? if they have insert teeth they could be 8620 or 8630 I forget what Gene Martin told me have even heard some had mild steel body with insert teeth.

I agree with what has been said, bags are 50# unless they say they are supper sacks which when I have gotten them have been 1500# to 2000# cheaper in the supper sack I was paying $180 for great coke. I have moved to another area and I can't find coke and coal here is $30 a bag (50#).

Cast iron is hi in carbon 2% to 5% wrought iron has no carbon.

That is not wrought iron that is cast iron!! it is no good for hammers. Forgot to add my choices for hammer steel are 4140, S7, L6 and H13 there are lots of steels that can be used another steel common would be 1040 don't waste your time with cast iron.
