  6. They have special glasses you can get that blocks the uv light, just go to the local weld shop they can fix you up. Yes it can hurt your eyes so I would not just sit there and stare at it.
  7. I too was going to offer some help with Alan's anvil trouble but I felt that he really did not want the help but rather wanted to argue about the advice given to him. I also thought Andrew's comment was very abrasive about not questioning the Admin. I know it was not directed at me but ever since I read it I can't get it out of my head that I feel like I have just entered a dictatorship where I am told what I can and can not do. I just hope the air will clear and we can get back to doing what we do best, beating steel. Merry Christmas to all.
  8. Thanks for the the welcome Ten Hammers. Glad to be here I have been cruising other forums but I am really liking this one because it lets me show off more of my abilities other than a bladesmith. Here I can show off my farrier skills and ornamental side as well.
  9. Aaron, That was about the best answer to the question, I probably could not have said it that well myself. Thanks for the comment on the shoe. backyardsmith, I hope Aaron answered your question, and thank you for the comment. There is another saying that goes like this. Most farriers make good blacksmiths but not all blacksmiths make good farriers .
  10. Thanks for the welcome guys, I wonder can we get our own Oregonians only forum  .
  11. Thanks guys I appreciate the comments glad you all liked it. To this day that is by far the toughest thing I have ever forged. Frosty where is Meadow Lakes, I use to live almost dead between Fairbanks and Anchorage when I was 15 years old. Spent almost 2 years up there with my aunt. Well that was a long time ago.
  12. Hi Cliff, Another newbie to this forum as well, as well as an Oregonian. Seems to be a few of us here. Also nice to see I have a few smiths with in fairly short drive.
  13. Hi Gary, I have been shoeing horses for going on 7 years now, and I have been forging before that but never got serious about it until I made the career change and had to forge everyday. I am on the other end of the state south of Grants Pass or Medford.
  14. OK I am missing something I don't see any pictures.
  15. It was originally for a horse that had a deep flexor tendon injury about 35 years ago. The shoe is called a split wedge bar shoe.
  16. Hi all, I am new here and thought I would share this with you. Every year they have the world championship blacksmithing contest at the Calgary Stampede. They have a divison that is a mail in, they specify the dimensions and other charectoristics that they want to see and everyone makes the same shoe as published for that year. in 2004 I entered this contest an placed 4th out of about 70 entries form 13 countries. I hope you all like this and I did this all buy hand no power tools, but the rules say you can do it anyway you want but the judges really like it if you do it old school. Thanks for looking. Just in case your wondering the other shoe belongs to a friend of mine he placed 13th.
  17. I agree with tbrforge I would quench up to where you don't want the heat and vice it up and upset it. If yo don't want to beat yourself to death trying to upset it, I would fold it and forge weld it till you have the desired size for your ball. On the twist I have seen guys doing long twists and they use a torch to keep the bar hot as they twist it.
  18. This followed me home not long ago, it was not free but it did come at unexpected time. It is a 1917 50# Little Giant it had a pal for the trip a 1 1/2 hp variable speed burking.
  19. yesteryearforge, Thanks for the welcome, I will sure try to give as much info as I can. Mike, Any time your down here drop me an email, your welcome at my shop anytime.
