  1. I wired in a plug at my shop and went to plug in my fan and it sound funny like it was running to fast. I thought it may have been the fan so I pluged in a cheap knock off dremel and POP it blew up. I'm guessing maybe I used to heavy a Gage of wire, is this possible. It's wired to a 40 amp breaker.
  2. xxxx flash and iPhones I'll have to wait to see all your toys but I can guess I'm a minimalist in comparison. Also it's not how much you have it's what you can do with them, the whole "motion of the ocean" theory.
  3. Dont do much fab work do ya, j/k. I seem to agree with everyone else I couldnt be without them, I actually need more. Like monster said great for jigs, or just about anything.
  4. Those look great I've never seen clogs with laces. It would be a good idea to swap those out with leather ones. My sister just got me a pair of clogs while she was in Denmark, I told her of this thread and all the positive comments about them. Have not worn them yet been moving then on vacation but looking forward to them.
  5. so if you had pai for the original plans should you get a discount for the new style
  6. I also called myself an ironworker for years, I mean thats what it said on my paycheck. Of course when you say "iron worker" people think you work high iron erecting buildings, bridges, etc, Id have to explain "No, wrought iron", pause,.... "oh so your more an artist". And you see I dont think thats the case. Now that I dont have a job ( I quit to start my company 5 years ago) I can call myself whatever I want like Monster said its all metal related. Heck I even listen to metal brutal hardcore stuff. People have called me Metal Marc for many years because of the music thing and then asked what I did well obviously what else would I do. I went canoeing recently one afternoon of course I was in the shop working beforehand. I had put on some sun screen, well I must have had some iron dust on me because within an hour I was rusting looked like an xxxxx xxxxxx. Friends were making fun, Metal Marc is so metal he doesnt sweat he rusts.(btw thats why its important to shower). So basically people can call me whatever they want to and so can I but what it boils down to is what Im doing to get paid this week Im a copper smith next Ill be a blacksmith and the following week ill be on vacation so dont call me.
  7. It looks like an old south bend or one of its many clones.
  8. Usually you find schedule 40 at lowes depot. The schedule rating is wall thickness. Shedule 40 and 80 1in pipe will both be 1" ID the OD is what varys.
  9. I'm sure many of you have seen the news it's being called the 500 year flood. Many people in middle Tennessee have been hit hard, many in my neighborhood. We left our house Sunday night in a boat and expected the worse. Our house is bone dry, you can see the water line just barely crested at our foundation. My new shop did not not make it out so good, I was told there was 4ft of water in it. Thankfully I have not moved in yet so no tools were injured. I'm gonna need to do some sheetrockin and the landlord is covering all the expense. Here's the lesson many people are learning if you live near water and they say your house is not on a flood plain I'd get the insurance anyways too many people are finding out the hard way. Hasn't flooded in our liftimes doesn't mean it won't ever flood. My heart goes out to the many who lose there homes in these acts of nature floods huricanes eartquakes. You never think it could happen to you, well it can. Marc
  10. Well got much worse Sunday night we left our house in a boat and the water is still rising. Good luck up there in Clarksville. Marc
  11. Yeah its pretty bad out there. Thats some good footage. We live close to the Cumberland river and Ive never seen it this high
  12. Id go to college if I had to do it over. You're young keep blacksmithing a hobby for now. You need experience. Get a job in a related field save money buy tools and learn.
  13. Well need and want are two different things I would like a 4x or 5x 10'. I havent priced out new plate and wanted to look into secondary plate also. It would be much less labor leveling one plate as opposed to many slats. How thick? I would love a 2" slab but thats prolly out of my budget at the time (wifes having a baby and moving into a new shop all at the same time). Is 1/2" or 5/8" too thin? Would boring holes be worth while. Marc
  14. Thanks for all the feedback I like the look of it mostly and sounds like they can work. The smell is nice too I just wonder as that water heats up my shop is gonna start to smell like a whiskey bar. I figure if it does work out then maybe I'll take the tour of the Makers Mark plant and get a barrel of theirs, I do drink more Makers than Jack it's prolly a sin here in Tennessee to say that, allthough I don't drink many spirits anymore.
  15. I had some family visit from up north and we decided to go to Jack Daniels. It was a great tour, and it was free. Walking around seeing all the oak barrels I thought how cool would be one of those as a slack tub. Of course you can them and I did, just a half barrel. It still smells of whiskey. Im not sure if it will make a great slack tub but it has more style than an oil drum, we will see.
  16. Wow thats awesome, I love Poe, I think Ill listen to some Alan parsons after seeing that.
  17. Just your average flux coated bronze brazing rod. Im never to specific at the welding store I tell them 5 pounds of brazing rods and I get what they give me and Ive never had a problem.
  18. I'd braze it, do it all the time just keep most of the heat on the steel.
  19. If you dont want to shell out the cash then maybe look into a fabricated anvil out of several pieces of plate, they showed a sketch of one over at anvil fire. Dont know if its cheaper but 1 inch plates prolly more abundant than train axle. 1x6x32 six of em sandwiched together gives you 6x6 @ over three hundred pounds.
  20. Yeah, you got six grand for a couple acorn tables than that's great. I'm looking for an alternative.
  21. So I'm looking into ideas on a new welding/fab table, I'm moving in a new shop at the end of the month and I want to set it up to last. I currently work on a 4'x4'x1" winch is fine except for larger projects which require the floor or one of my wooden tables. I'm not sure if I want one large piece of plate for the top and maybe bore holes in it for clamping like One of those modular fixture tables or maybe a table with slats, sorta t-slots. Much less boring for a table with slats but it might be a chore to level the individual plates. If I do the one plate method how thick minimum should it be. I heat and beat on my current table and it's done fine. I imagine if I do the slat method I may want it thicker since there would be less area to dissipate the heat... I don't know? Also if I do the slat method how wide should the plates be and spacing, 1in maybe 1.5. I'm also open for ideas you have maybe come up with. Thanks Marc
