  1. so i went to harbor freight to pick me up a small anvil for small projects (and first TRUE anvil) however i didn't walk out with an anvil. mainly for the fact the design has changed. item#03999 is no longer stocked. (traditional style with full horn) instead we get a slightly larger version with a cut-off horn Item#69425... SERIOUSLY!?! i am disappoint HF
  2. nice find frosty i believe that's probably how they did it. not exactly where i can find power-supply that can run up more then 12v DC and have enough current to do this.. still would be a relay cool thing to at least try heres the chart frosty is talking about Copyrighted material removed I spoke with the copyright owner and got his permission to put a link click here to the color chart posted on his web site. Therefore the link is used with his knowledge and permission.
  3. very interesting. i wouldn't mind trying that. would require the same type of tools to do electro plating id assume. and yes. these was made in china so of course there going to be cheap.
  4. Hello everybody. i just made a trip to a nice little event that was going on in town and found a relay nice sword i couldn't help but to buy. its colors just had me. i'm relay interested in how the process to get them is done. i wouldn't mind messing around with that process if it isn't all that complex. the process is supposedly called "spectrum treatment" and i'm not exactly how it works. but id aether have to say its quenching it in some special juice at just the right time or some special clear-coat that gives it the effect. if anybody knows anything about this process in detail please inform me more on it. here is a image of a finish product with the special spectrum treatment Copyrighted material has been removed I found the image - link here
  5. im good now. i spent a 2 hour road trip and got 250 pounds. coal is som GREAT stuff.. gets it MUCH hotter and lasts MUCH longer
  6. if your looking for something for a solid fuel setup, i use a simple dimmer with a off setting for my forge and when a peace isnt in i turn it off compleatly. when i put the peace back in. crank it back up. saves a good amount of fuel.
  7. good points pointed out... i guss ill remain collecting unemployment for a wile. and also. its illigal to do smithing for a liveing in some places? O.o thats a little odd. if worse comes to worse. my unemployment runs out i could at least make a few things. haul some supplys and a few pre-made things to this uber flea market i konw of and do some shows and sell what i can.
  8. im shure there is many people who probably already do this, some for a good liveing, some for fun, some for very little and probably not doing to well. (kinda the reason why im posting this) im considering in blacksmithing for a liveing, yes. for most. you probably already are thanking.. "is this guy nuts! he just started!" yes. i did just start. but im seeing too much progression from this craft. i see soo many possabilities... not to mention being my own boss would be ownage! goods i can possably see: 1. already mentioned. be my own boss. 2. work my own hours 3. be creative. make what i want / what people would want 4. no restrictions on hours etc. basicly more i make/do more i have a chance at getting payed bad i can see: 1. owning my own busness... thats probably going to be a nightmare around tax time... 2. expence at running the operatoins. (coal. power. utilities etc) 3. danger... im shure the risk factor for a job working with near molten iron, galvanized posion possabilites, sulferic acid burns, a shop fire could compleatly kill this as a career 4. i hate being hot when i work! (looks like im going to have to get over that) why would i even consider this? 1. todays econmay. im getting sick of spending months/almost a year running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to find a decent job 2. my own relyabilty. alot of stress releaved from not haveing to worry about getting fired for being 3 seconds late at punch in, not worry about some joke offering to do my job for less... giveing the company all that much more reason to fire me 3. no collage needed for a "good" job. something if noticed.. i spent 2 years in trade school learning about computers and i have just the same chaces of a reguler highschool dropout at getting a job at a computer shop. basicly if i want to become a contracted / "profeshanal" computer tech years/ thousands of dollars of more schoolilng is needed. 4. worst case possabilites... the econamy 100% crashes and currency is useless or near extenstion type accadent such as mega flood/ asteroid..... hey... it could happen ^^;.. my job will be of MUCH great use for recovery reson for posting this: i was wondering if anybody has any suggestoins on this. if i should take this step? should i avoide this step? any possable grants/ low-to no intrest loans i can get eather from a company or government to start a real shop and suggestins on how i could get started if a "quck" start by a loan or grant is not possable. i was considering trying to get in to the Renaissance when its open and off season work at a local flea market doing shows and selling my product there. if anybody konws of any tips/suggestoins or info that would be of much help. please feel free to tell me. if you wish to keep it perosnal you can email me at danz4092009@hotmail.com i do apploigize for the mis-spells.. that itself is a reason why im finding it hard to get a job sadly. Thank you. Daniel Goode
  9. looks a little wet and foggy. where is that?
  10. yea was just some gigga bolt i found along the tracks one day
  11. dunno about those. arnt those a lil pricey? i thank they can be easly made. peace of sheet metal and a segment of pipe that you dont mind cutting a slit in. heck there might even be a BP on it
  12. if you want something that can take a beating then, you could always use a air gate
  13. ok, the knife was a nice start. but i decided to kick it up a knotch! iv started my next project and i have to say the coal i got is a HUGE differance... i dont thank ill ever go charcoal agan... mabe to start the coal but thats about it. anyway. in the process of makeing this. ALOT has went wrong.. this thing must be cursed! 1. first run with coal and watned to proserve it so put out with water... WAY TOO MUCH... water... blower fan/motor drowed to near death. basicly had to replace 2. both hammer heads on my 2 pund and 2.5 pound made a quick trip across the shop as the handle remained in my hand. so i had to get some hammer wedges/nails thingys to fix those 3 upon finaly getting a shape that was accpetable i decided to start grinding/sanding away. guss what broke next!.. if you gussed my grandpa's belt sander... YOU WIN!... nothing unforitly -----inprovments made wile doing this project------ 1. MUCH better blower now... i can melt/burn steel if i crank it to 11 2. more expernace. YAY! 3. i raised my anvil so its at a much more manageable hight. still need to raise a few inches 4. no more wobbly hammer heads. or flying in 1 case. 5. i now have a quinch tub/jug thingy so that comes in handy 6. better tools. tongs that can hold mutli size peaecs. (still need better ones tho) ____________________ a look at my progress! ___ please note this project is still incompleate.________
  14. i got one of these for mine and works like a charm: Dimmer switch
  15. well. i tryed some more upsetting practice today. so far i thank im comeing along pritty good... still a bit rusty on the tactic but able to do it! in the 2 pics show a peace i worked on, it was once a railroad spike.. seems easy to upset that. just flatten the head side down and squire it off right? well. i did thisone backwords! i upseted the spike end and turned the head into a reguler size squre chunk so i basicly made the small end big. and the big end small!
  16. i have a good guss what a gubby would be doing wanting a anvil... only 2 reasons i can thank of... hire a ferrior to care for his horses and supply him with an anvil OR display... sadly...
  17. Around the CIncinnati area. Divers home/guarden 513-422-5491 (middle town) $11.45 100 punds hammersvill coal and feed 937-379-1888 (hamersville) lol, the "iron-y" is overwhelming! $150 1 tun $7.50 100 pounds
  18. the blower i was useing i got from a hair dryer from goodwill for $1.50 so not much was lost... who knows i could go down tommarow and it fire right up. if not. its no big deal. there is an old car/AC system blower fan ill slap on, i have one of those 1.5 - 12 adjustable DC power converter from raido shack so i can change my settings. i thank im going to mod my ash dump area tho. i thank im going to put a system that has cable linkage to dump ash when pulled or something along those lines.
  19. Ok. i finaly found some coal venders in the cincinnati that has reguler store hours. Divers home/guarden 513-422-5491 (middle town) $11.45 100 punds hammersvill coal and feed 937-379-1888 (hamersville $150 2000 punds $7.50 100 pounds i decided to give the hammersvill coal a try... and i thank i might be regreating it. it took 2 hours to drive there. unforitly the road for the most part was a 35mph road so what looked like a short drive... was pritty long. once finaly getting there the place was about as ran down is it gets. the guy basicly lives in the barn he sells stuff from. smells like chicken crap... kinda discusting... but i didnt drive 2 hours for nothen! wheres this coal you sell! i dont even get escorted to the supply im just told its over there... *stars off into a huge field with very little landmarks* hmm... well after geting the tear weaght of my car i proceaded my hunt for a pile of coal on this guys property.. sucsess! eventuly... the 2 images are of hammersvill coal.. its not nearly what i was hopeing to see. it looks like its LOADED with inpureatys... but i guss you get what you payed for... and im not diveing 4 hours to have a drive on some guys farm... so i loaded up 4 feed sacks and got ~250 punds for $18 not too bad of a deal price wise... and proceeded home to give my first coal burn a go... and this is what i experance, VIDEO HERE a super thick cloud of yellow smoke and coal that oddly likes to clump together. and it also does odd things to metal i put in it... nothing noticeable right off. but the second i quienched a peace i flattend out it turned red! anybody konw anything about this stuff please inform me? is it good? bad? or just meh?
  20. just had my first coal burn expernace today. and something i have noticed. charcoal burns best starting the fire with the fan ON to start Coal on the other hand dosnt like to start its burn if its too windy. it likes to start calm and once it catches youll hear a *POOF* wich is when you know it cought fire and its time to hit the "turbo" then those puppys get nice and hot!
  21. WOW! number 6 and your already playing with demascus?!?
  22. nakedanvil thats cheating! expensive tools are cheat! XD anyway. i tryed another peace today. i sucsessfuly "upseted" it a bit messy and not much mass added but i can say its accomplished. ill work on it more once i find a cheap sorce of fuel. untell then im not forking anymore cash for charcoal. just getting too expensive.
  23. wouldnt the water, evne tho be put on 1 secon cool the whole peace down tho?
