Kohyar Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Hi everyone I am new to this site and have no background in blacksmithing. I was wondering how and where do i go to learn blacksmithing? Quote
RBrown Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 reading information here is a good place to start and also finding a local blacksmith organization in your area then if money is no object buy a few tools if money is a problem scrounge scroung scroung. locate all your local scrap metal places and machine shops and metal fabrication shops and ask if you can get drops or scrap from them. John Martin Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 It would help if we knew where you were located. Well this forum is a great start. Sorry for my lousy reply, I hope others will chime in that will help but the basics are.. a fire an "anvil" - could be a actual anvil, rock, ASO(anvil shaped object) a hammer - " " and metal. Quote
Frosty Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Welcome aboard, glad to have ya. Check out the getting started section of IFI, then there are the Blueprints for ideas and good practical solutions for tools, equipment and projects. Be sure to pack supplies though, you're likely to spend way more time reading than you expect at first and you don't want to get hungry or thirsty. If you'll click "User CP" at the top of the page and edit your profile to show your location you'll find the folk close enough to you to lend a hand personally. Ask us anything you need to, some of us REALLY like to talk. Frosty Quote

781 Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 Try [ABANA] The Artist Blacksmith's Association of North America, Inc. then click on resources/afiliates. This is a list of blacksmith groups unfortunetly they are not listed by state but alphabetically by the name of the group so you might have to keep trying each group till you find something close to home. Then contact them to see if there is a member close or a meeting close. Cheap DVD-Rs can be gotten from UMBA Online then click on library for details. Only one title basic blacksmithing which is RD65 but houndres of hours of blacksmithing Quote
Glenn Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 IForgeIron.com > Blacksmithing Groups is an alphabetical listing by states and countries of blacksmithing groups and organizations. Quote

rthibeau Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Kohyar.....first you have to serve an apprenticeship in the northern climates...take your pick from Alaska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Michigan. If you survive that, you can discuss progression to blacksmithing.....:) Quote
