I made a bunch of gas keys a while back. I drilled then hole, and drifted to size with a square drift. 

No idea what a gas key is. We make our keys mostly out of metal, they are more heavy than gas, but they don't float away

Gas keys are used to turn or off the natural gas to a house that is supplied by a utility company. I may not be right in this case but that's pretty close. We had one when I was a kid.
