July 23, 2025Jul 23 Seems newer and better built than most post vices I encounter. The mini anvil on the back was a nice touch too. No point to this, just cool to look at.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 That is a pretty cool vise, I've seen something like it browsing through an antique vise website. I don't seem to have the url saved but found it reading a thread on IFI a few years ago. Bummer you didn't buy it, you never know when it's exactly what you need you know. Frosty The Lucky.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 I've seen these for sale before; indeed, there's one currently listed on FB Marketplace a couple hours' drive from me: The thing I like about these is that because the leg is made from a piece of pipe provided by the smith, you can change the height simply by changing the length of that pipe.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 These were part of a set which included a drill brace. http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=11199
July 23, 2025Jul 23 That would have followed me home, just for the coolness of it. I can’t control the wind. All I can do is adjust my sails. ~Semper Paratus~
July 23, 2025Jul 23 I believe the leg on a Cole vise fitted into a socket with a set screw. Frosty The Lucky.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 Okay, I need to revise my earlier comment, in light of new and better information. The addition of a pipe to the bottom of the Cole vise was NOT intended to convert it into a post vise, but to allow the worker to use it as a giant pipe wrench. Here's a screenshot from their promotional material: The entire brochure can be seen online HERE. However, even if you're not using it as a post vise, the ability to rotate the head could come in very handy, especially for filing, grinding, and welding.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 Is it just me or has the meanings of words changed that much? I don't see the vise "swinging" in any pics or can I imagine a feature that would allow it. I see "rotation". Frosty The Lucky.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 Just one of many accessories? Heck a boy could have a collection of them, like different top and bottom tools. Hmmmm? Frosty The Lucky.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 1 hour ago, Frosty said: I don't see the vise "swinging" [...] I see "rotation". The bottom of the vise could be interpreted as swinging from side to side.
July 23, 2025Jul 23 That'd be a mighty long stretch, do you "swing" the handle to close a vise? I'm still betting an evolution in definition. Frosty The Lucky.
