DC712001
Can you use an Acetylene Regulator on a Propane Cylinder?
SK-Buckwheat
If you are looking at using it for your cutting torch, yes you can. You should change your hoses though. I just can't remember now which type is which. I can find out for you if you need. You will need the adapter to put on your regulator so it will attach to a propane tank too. rlarkin
The regulator is fine. The hose needs to be type "T". Type "T" is suitable for ALL gasses, where as type "R" is for acetylene only. You also must use cutting tips designed for propane. Standard tips allow propane to burn up into the tip. Propane tips are usually 2 piece, but will fit on standard handles. I do use standard brazing tips with no problems.
DC712001
Thanks for the replies/info. No, not planning on gas-welding with it. Was looking for a regulator to use for a Propane Forge Furnace. Was looking for an AVCO "Red Hat" regulator. Looked at Airgas's Welding Supply website (as there is one of there stores nearby) and "searched" for a "Propane Regulator." This was what they offered:Radnor® By Harris® Model 25-50C-510P Fuel Gas/Propane Regulator With CGA510 - Airgas.com It is $69, probably hose sold separately. Pondered wether I could simply use my Acetylene regulator instead of buying a new unit. Wonder if any local (to me) supplier sells the Red Hat propane regulator? If I can find one, what is the price (typically?)
DC712001
Was checking out "Zoeller Forge" website, and it looks like he uses/sells a "Fisher" Regulator, Model number 67CH-743 for $34. Turns out, that there is a Fisher distributor a few miles away. Does that seem a good choice (1/4-inch NPT?)Copyrighted photo removed and a link places into the text
ChrisB
That fisher is a good choice. When I built my gasser I played the search all over for a REG it turned out Larry Zoeller had the best deal. Zoeller Forge Home Page Gas Forge parts, Atmospheric Burners, and Blacksmithing Dont rush building your forge you'll just end up re-doing it later. Dont ask me how I know... Bryce Masuk
Can you use an Acetylene Regulator on a Propane Cylinder? just for future referance never take a regulator or line that has been USED on acetylene or propane and interchange them you might find yourself caught in a violent reaction
nealj
I switch back and forth with my regulator all the time from acet. to propane without any problem. Maybe I'm just lucky. What is the danger supposed to be?
larrynjr
I bought mine from a gas bbq place, it's a bit spendy but has a pressure gage as well.Propane Regulator for Propane Gas Regulation It's the COMRI-20 model. ThomasPowers
I've used old acetylene regulators for propane forges too. You are supposed to check them to see if they are rated for all fuel gasses as some regulators are supposed to have O rings that might degrade. I have not had a problem yet. KYBOY
Cant really add anything that hasnt already been said..You can use them but it is advisable to switch to a "T" grade hose..That and your tips will be a different configuration..
