3/4" split cross

Recommended Posts

Crosses don't have "correct" measurements so I don't know what to tell you. Have you made split crosses from easier to work stock, say 3/8"? A couple inches of 3/8" sq. has pleasing proportions. 1/2" sq about 4" makes a nice crucifix.  I've never made one from 3/4" so I'd start off making one or several from 3/8" making notes of how far I split and how much overlap I left. Then when I started getting ones I liked I'd double those measurements and give 3/4" a try. With crossed fingers!

I have this printout. I don't recall what site it came from but the note at the top indicates a YouTube channel. I can't find a file or bookmark anywhere so I just took a picture of the printout for you. IMG_20230526_191931_1.thumb.jpg.31c5171100f51669ba63f8b00dd4e947.jpg

Like most things,  I go by eyeball.   I've done 1 inch square stock.   To forever to chisel through but that was a while back.  Do yourself a favor and draw it on first, cold chisel it in so you can see the design hot,  and build a good holddown of some type.
