(I used to have a shrink rule for laying out casting patterns; each side had a scale for a different metal; so when you drew and built the pattern and cast that metal in it; it would shrink to the exact right size upon cooling.) Instead of going into the garage and getting a tape we used what we had, Little Kings beer bottles. Whole bottle, to the neck, to the top/bottom of the label, etc. was our measurements.
