USANewbie
To save on fuel, I would like to build a pilot light for my burner so i can shut the gas off between heats and automatically light again when I turn the gas back on. How would I build it? Thanks.
Mikey98118
pilot lights don't work on high speed burners (like most of these); their main flames blow pipot flames out. A separate tiny burner, which is turned down, will work, if it is separated far enough away from the main burner.
Goods
In mine, the few times I’ve ran it, it ignite without help just from the still glowing forge. If you want to save gas between heats, setup an idle circuit.
Mikey98118
A similar trick is commonly accomplished with a high-low valve system on the burner.
Goods
Looks like Mikey was faster at a posting than I can edit… David
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Maybe look into a piezo igniter that you push the button to make a spark. Like Goods said if you don't wait too long to turn the gas back on the residual heat will reignite the burner.
Mikey98118
Various versions of such a valve system have been around for decades. You can find one of them neatly laid out on the Ron Reil forge pages. Google them.
USANewbie
Thanks everyone. I have a lot to think about. The high low burner idea sounds good. Maybe i can do that with a valve?
USANewbie
Mikey, where are those pages located?
Mikey98118
"Ron Reils burner ages" are maintained on its own site by ABANA, which is why I suggested that you google it. https://ronreil.abana.org/design1.shtml
USANewbie
Thanks Mikey.
Mikey98118
I know we aren't supposed to post commercial sites, but since when did that include ABANA's Ron Rel burner pages? And what the heck happened ti to them anyway; they're a total mess!
Frosty
This is the first time I've visited Ron's site in quite a while and it is a mess. I remember when Ron stopped answering questions from people who obviously hadn't read the instructions. I haven't talked to Ron in a while either. Know what he's up to? Frosty The Lucky. Mikey98118
I think he is even more retired then I am. I don't think he has anything to do with that site anymore; hasn't for years. Last I heard, ABANA kept it alive. Don't no what is going on there now, but I won't be suggesting it to anyone. It looks like a worse information source than YouTube! Frosty
The last we talked he was recovering from a heart attack and raising horses north of Boise. It was a real close call but he said he was doing well. Deb and I were planning on visiting my little Sister in Boise and I was going to see about meeting up but that hasn't panned out. Maybe when we can start snow birding. I think he lost interest a while back, health concerns maybe, I know people bugging him constantly without bothering to read the directions made him hate talking about burners to anybody. We talked around the subject the one time we spoke on the phone. Maybe one of us should see if we can find and link the "idle circuit" URL so USAN isn't confused by the mayhem? Ron and I used to make each other scratch our heads about burners in "theforge.list" days. Frosty The Lucky.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
I found a picture of an idle circuit here, pretty simple. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/how-long-will-a-20-tank-run-your-forge.1338888/
Frosty
Bladeforums wouldn't let me open the pic without registering. Soooo, I did a web search for "propane forge idle circuit image" And low and BEHOLD! A nice diagram linked back to a thread on Iforge. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/13934-idler-valves-make-your-own/ Frosty The Lucky. USANewbie
Frosty, i tried to save that image but my security said it couldn't be saved securely.
Frosty
Book mark the page with a note. Or try "Save As" to a file folder. It's easier on my comp to save as than it is to white list an image. Saving the whole page will always stress your security, try saving ONLY the image. OR save only the contents of that post without the header or other stuff. It's not always easy saving things off the web, too many bad guy thieves make security really sensitive. Frosty The Lucky.
