Hammer weight

Recommended Posts

I feel like this might be in the running for amateur question of the week. When determining a hammers weight, would I try and subtract the handle weight some how? How would I determine that the hammer I'm looking at there in the junk pile is at or under the two lbs I'm looking for if the handle weighs enough to offset that judgement or measurement?

Thanks,

Mat

Some heads will have the weight stamped into them here in the usa---lighter ones in ounces and heavier ones in pounds.  Once you get used to the sizes you will be able to make a good guess at the weight; but really what you need to look for is "too heavy", "too light" and just right for YOU!  There is not some magical number that everyone has to use.

Head only. After a while you'll be able to heft it in your hand and estimate the weight pretty accurately. Just don't air swing it, that's hard on the joints. If you're still not sure you can take something with you to compare.
