Wakapalypse
Hey there everyone im getting into blacksmithing and at work i have a lifetume supply of 1 7/16 cable that i plan to use to forge with, my only issue is its used and gets covered in tar, is this something i have to soak in acetone or will the forge burn it out without creating a molten mess in my forge and adding any extra fire hazards? Thank you guys.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
More like cause inclusions in the weld. I wouldn't use acetone to clean it. Diesel would be less expensive and less volatile.
ThomasPowers
Tar is MUCH better than rust! Diesel. Don't forget to check a clean cut end for non-metallic or non-ferrous lays in the cable.
Steve Sells
I suggest you read a bit before trying to forge your cable, Just about anything written about pattern welding talks about clean surfaces, so you asking about it here shows you have not read much about it, Take a little time to read through the general smithing section of the forum, there is a lot for a beginner to learn about forge welding there
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
What Steve said. ^^^^ Also welcome to IFI, I suggest reading this. READ THIS FIRST
Wakapalypse
Sounds good thank you everyone! One other question will any tar burning and melting out from the cable harm the forge?
BIGGUNDOCTOR
More likely to damage your lungs than the forge
