Kacy8261
Hello, I received this anvil and would like to know more about who made it, it’s age, the concave bottom and how the maker got it to ring like it does! Someone told me to drop a ball bearing on face in different places and see what kind of rebound it has.. It bounces almost back up to my hand! Maybe 85-90% of the way. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Kacy8261
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Knowing where in the world you are located may help. Hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. READ THIS FIRST I think it's a Swedish North Star anvil 130 pounds. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/48016-swedish-star/
Frosty
Welcome aboard Kacy, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many members live within visiting distance. It's cast Swedish steel and will do damage to your ears so get GOOD hearing protection. It rings like that because it's homogeneous high carbon vanadium steel throughout so it resonates like a bell. I have a cast Swedish anvil and mounting it on a steel tripod stand quietened it nicely. Good score, congratulations. Once you've used that beauty nothing else will do, not even a Mousehole. BIGGUNDOCTOR
Kohlswa anvil made in Sweden. Great anvil, but susceptible to edge chipping due to the hardness of the top. Only hit hot steel, and don't hit the edges with the hammer alone.

I have edited my location and attempted to add a profile pic but I need to reduce size of file first. I also looked at the “Read this First” as well. I will attempt to comply with the rules set forth in said document. On 7/14/2019 at 2:17 AM, Frosty said: Welcome aboard Kacy, glad to have you. Frosty
You're welcome Kacy, it's our pleasure. You don't need to thank us individually, we're not that formal a bunch, the occasional "thanks everybody" is plenty good enough. Frosty The Lucky. It was pure luck that I remembered the star as a Swedish makers mark, Forgot it was used by Kohlswa. You have a premier anvil to say the least. They ring so loudly because they are cast steel and a lot of us have found out to quiet the ring, is to set the anvil with cheap latex calking compound between the base and anvil stand. Doing that will tone it down but not effect the rebound at all.
Kacy8261
Sorry for the multiple replies. I’ve always tried to be punctual, try to figure it out for myself first before bothering someone else & when receiving help from someone to make sure to always thank them & try to return the favor. Steve Shimanek
I have a Swedish North Star 165 lb anvil also; I had to repair a lateral crack and edges with hard facing wire, but it is still a good anvil. Logo looks like yours.
