C-1ToolSteel
Have you tried the ring and rebound tests?
marklewis1
Used a 300g engineering hammer and taped the anvil lightly and it bounced back to the same height with a distinctive ring.
arftist
Looks like a cast iron fake. Hope you didn't pay much.

Daswulf
If it had a ring to it, it sounds more like cast steel than cast iron. It does look cast tho.
ThomasPowers
I've had people not familiar with anvils give me misleading reports on ring before as they had no experience to judge it by. The bounce is positive; but the ball bearing test will give an objective reading. Also LOCATION; If I asked you to help identify a banged up used car; would your choices differ depending on what country it's in? Very unusual to see a Lada in the USA and fairly unusual to see a Ford in Russia for example. Anyway if it reads over 70% on the ball bearing test USE IT and be happy! ThomasPowers
JB's are good cast *steel* anvils; more prone to find them in the UK and Australia; but they did travel some.
